2.8 hilux more questions

Post by Grimey »

im looking at a 96 2.8d dualcab lux atm, in the bottom door sill theres about a 5-10cm strip of rust and a bit more further up, how weary should i be of it? should i steer well away from it? i checked under the carpet in the backof the cab and there was no rust. theres a lot of red dirt in the engine bay aswell but i guess thats to be expected. inside looks pretty clean and tidy. i would like to get it checked out, but dont trust RAC(mate had a 89 surf with a fucked head or something majorly wrong, he just got a quick bandaid fix and they didnt pick it up) im in perth, anyone know of trusted mechs etc in NOR

theres only 148km on the clock which sounds really good but would that be because its been rebuilt? sorry but im pretty clueless:)

cheers for any help

ps what should i be paying for something like this? tyres are prob 30% its pretty much stock, just roof racks and roo bar

with that era lux, the body, roof, floor, wheel arches and tray were hot dip galvanised. the doors and hood are NOT.

but considering how many there are out there, i would pass on it unless you know somewhere you can get a rust free door from for cheap.

the other rust trap is at the front of the door sills when you open the drivers door- crap gets caught in there and can rust it away.

148K kms wouldnt be unusual for a lux thats not done a lot of kms- like a station truck. my 92 has 340,000 on the clock.

Know any places that do 4wd fitouts? we have a mob here in SA called alltrac who will do a very comprehensive check of the vehicle for you- costs about $160 but they go thru it with a fine comb- including checking diffs for contamination in the oil and free play, conditions of suspension etc.
