The torque rod is there because the springs on hiluxs are flat or convex so when torque is applied the springs want to wrap.
So yes the torque rod is important if you are using Hilux springs.

still running std steer atm with dropped draglink but considering x over steer using the 60 box or an ifs hilux one. using lifted heavy duty springs if it makes any difference

Definetly go the x-over and piss off the torque rod. The torque rod isn't required if you're no longer running the std push-pull style of steering - it is only there to stop the wheels steering as the axle rolls slightly under braking.
