HELP with winch!!!

HELP with winch!!!
Howdy,
Need some advice on the winch that came with my new troopy. It's a 97 model, ex ambulance and it has a hydraulic winch fitted to it.
problem is well it doesnt work.
I presume there should be some form of power cable going to it but there is none. The only cables going to it are from the controller and there's no power going to the controller either.
Does anyone have an idea of where the power cable might go OR have a wiring diagram of a similar winch?
Cant see any info about model number or brand or anything on it.

yeah all good boys... got it sorted... got the multi out and there was a power cable to the controller box but it wasnt connecting. so i replaced the wiring and she's sweet...
get to give her a test run tomorrow.
Anyone heading to wattagans give me a buzz 0422 628 363

does it look like this http://www.milemarker.com/winches.html
they are a great winch i have one on my truck the two levers on the gearbox end control neutral and the two speeds

similar...
was going to test it on this weekend but couldnt move the lever that should apparently change the gear...
Anyone know who I should take it to get it sorted? I'm in sydney, northern beaches.

yeh i am pretty sure that the tjm is a rebadged milemarker
squirt some penetrating oil at the base of the levers to try and free them up
sounds like your winch is in high gear
if you move both the levers to the oposite positions then it will be in low gear
each lever has a function one is high gear and free
one is low gear and free
if you have both levers in free the winch is free
if you have low engaged and high in free then it is in low
if you have high engaged and low in free then it is in high
if you have high engaged and low engaged the it will be locked
my levers have high and low on them respectivly but mine is 1 year old and has billet levers the older ones had pressed metal levers
hope i did not confuse you too much
i ran mine for aprox an hour during a long recovery up the creb track in a downpoor after smashing a free wheeling hub with the diff locks and it did not get hot or miss abeat my old warn xd 9000 would have died within 15 min
if you want to make it really hoot fit a pto hyd pump this will make it three time the speed of an electric i am nearly finished my system
hope this helped

Alright... I think I need some inox and some fiddle room for the levers. I will have a shot at it on the weekend.
Yeah I've been told that the hydros are very very reliable so I was happy this rig has one. But I just need it to pull the weight.
I'm not concerned so much about speed, just a bit of insurance incase I get stuck like i did today!
Thanks boys, will let you know how i go.

So i used the pursuader and got the levers to move... I now have it in low gear.
It does now pull the weight... I know I said I wasn't concerned about speed... BUT it is very slow, ha ha.
What sort of cost is involved with these PTO pumps you guys have been telling me about?

I got my winch working with the pto pump last week it is too fast in high gear even to wind it on to retract the cable your hands cannot keep up
the cable retracts its entire length 40m in less than 1 min
in low gear it is faster than it used to be in high
i am using 1/2 inch lines and a mechanical control handel for high flow and about 2500psi i also i can vary the speed by how far i push the handel
i have a 28 ltr res as well
cost pto pump from power auto about $1900 hoses $500 and i fabbed up my own res prob $500 if it were a custom alloy under body one like mine
std fitt one would be cheaper
it is not a cheap set up but there is nothing more controllable , faster or more powerfull with the duty cycle to boot

In which case your trusty elecctric winch would last maybe 5-10mins longer......if your luckyvk7ybi wrote:Except when youve just drowned/blown/cant start your motor and you have no winch at all..thrashlux wrote:there is nothing more controllable , faster or more powerfull with the duty cycle to boot
If the chips are down and your motor is not running (never happened to me)thats when you get out the hand winch
what has happend many times is being stuck in the water with an electric winch that stopped working
I have an xd 9000 elec winch on my truck as well as the hydrualic and it is good for 10 to 15 min max then it over heats i have it mounted on the rear but i have a pulley system so it can pull forward if required
but i wont count on it
after two weeks up the cape of being thrown into water the elec winch is always got corosion on the brush holders and springs even after i sealed it and had compressed air into the motor for all river crossings
it is a dream that an elec winch will pull you for any time or distance out of water with no engine running hand winch is a far better option
hard work but it will work as long as you are there and willing
trusty and elec winches should not be in the same sentence especially with water around
i have had elec winches before i have found something better now

the pto pump gives more pull power due to the 2500 psi vs 1500 for the steer pump but the winch is still only rated to 12000lb (in my case)
in saying that i can pull more force in high gear but in low it would rip the front of the truck or break the cable before stoping
the main reason for the big pump is the speed
you can get clutch pumps that can be mounted off the eng (like an ac compressor) these start at about $800 and need to be mounted you need a cog belt to run them with any power
these are cheaper you would still need a res.
cheers
