1986 petrol hilux alternator problem

Post by 4be »

I have a 1986 Hilux with a 4y electronic dissy motor.

My problem is everytime my alternator sees dirty muddy water it plays up. It is either the brushes get stuck or the external rectifier plays up.
Both are brand new.

I went through some dirty water today and staight away the charge light came on.

Has anyone else had this problem, or is there something I can do to help stop this again.

ps. there is no bashplate on, or any other protection around the alternator.
Thanks in advance.

Greg you have always had trouble with those alternators, so has every other Lux I've seen.
Why not adapt a bigger better alt. EG: EF Falcon 100A or Commonwhore 90A. or Camry or whatever looks like a good fit.
Both are cheap as chips at the wreckers and both have built in regs so you could replace your alt and reg with just an alt.

I had an '83 model with exactly this problem.
Turned out to be the capacitor on outside rear of alternator. Once wet it would short from centre-wire to case.
Solution was to apply a dob of silicon around where the centre-wire enters the capacitor.
hope this helps.
