Hey guys, I own a 1992 2.5L NH Turbo diesel pajero and considering trading it in on a 1994 3.0L Petrol SWB pajero, just want to find out some facts about the 3.0L engine, if its ok or not?
Reasons for trading...
- Want more power off road, the 2.5L TD seems to just not have enough
- The swb has 33" x 12.5 x 15 muddies and snorkel and big winch bar fun for off road
- The diesel is blowing smoke, black but a decent amount so bit concerned about it.... been told it may just be injectors but thats like $1000 fix so not sure
- Diesel just cost lots to run, fuel costs + servicing more regularly + overall cost of repairs
Please let me know what you think, am i an idiot to let go of the diesel and will i just pay more for the petrol?
Dave

I've only had my NF 3.0L for a couple of weeks but I reckon its a good thing. Doesn't use much more petrol than my mate's 2.5L td NG uses diesel, for what they are they're a pretty economical engine. Including a blat up to Stockon playing around on the dunes it did about 17l/100km, not bad considering I was foot flat to the floor half the day! The 6G72 doesn't really like to rev but it does make decent torque lower down, peak torque's by about 3000rpm so it doesn't take a lot to move it around. Result is a fairly cheap vehicle to run given the alternatives (3.4 Prado, or Patrol/Cruiser etc). Mine revs a bit high at highway speeds for my liking (3000rpm at 110km/h) but I'd imagine 33s would help that bring it down a good couple of hundred RPM.
Though if the diesel needs injector work its worth having the pump tweaked to take advantage of it, and both together while a bit exxy would get you a fair bit more power and economy by the sound of it. But from what I've seen the 3.0L is a good engine. Just make sure the rings aren't shot (blows blue smoke), or that the engine's too oily.

Why don't you get a 3.5? I can't imagine there is much difference in price.
Plenty of power then, and basically no worse on petrol.
The 6G7x motors are known for being a bit smokey but most of this is down to worn valve stem seals, it is a Mitsi thing! 3.5's seem just as suseptable to worn seals as 3.0's.

Ok, the reason i saying the 3.0L is there is one for sale near me with snorkel, big tyres and looks in good nick, still got to turn it over to check smoke but looks well looked after. Its the GL not the GLX like mine but hey.... also it has 2 buttons in the middle of the centre console with forward and back arrows, these i guess are not standard anyone have any ideas what it could be.... winch maybe? but why are there 2 of them.... will post photo of switch asap but heres the car...
