power steering belt failure on 12ht

Post by 60 mad »

Well on the way home from Dartmouth dam, (fishing) me and the old man were cruising along at about 100km when the steering started to get stiff and very clunky, so we pulled up to find the power steering belt was broken but without a spare we had to keep going untill home (5 hours away).

Would driving this far without power steering do any damage to any component? because it was a fight to keep the old girl on the road and every turn had a big clunking noise which was worrying.

Any help would be appreciated.

dont think so

would just be heavy as a bargeload of shit to turn.

No idea what would be clunking, would worry me a bit too.

How much movement in your steering wheel? anymore than 2" is a good indication your box is worn significantly, could be where the clunking was coming from.

While the car is off, get someone to turn the steering wheel left to right, this will load up all your steering components, look for movement and clunking.

There is a good 4 inchs of play in it and it pulls to the left all the time so it was never really that good before the belt snapped so i think it might be time to have a really good look at all the steering components.

yep, time to check it all out, tie rod ends and steering box for the movement in the wheel, brakes and bearings to see whats causing the pulling to the left.

It's amazing how one thing turns into a fairly major job that ain't gunna take 5 minutes to fix but for it's age i can't complain. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks will see it all sorted.
