I did the first service on my 80 the other week and found the oil filter was so tight I had to drive a bar through it to be able to turn it. Also the g/box drain plug is on the drivers side, not on the bottom which is where I went looking for it.
I used a fleetguard LF3487 and AF4509 because I get them cheap through work and Caltex Havoline Premium (engine), Easyshift75w90 (g/box& x-fer), we have all these at work and were what the caltex web site recommended.

I once owned a 1fz. It would timing chain rattle on startup. Toyotas fix is to install a small filter....the z9 is equivalemt to the std sized toyota filter.
I had my injecters cleaned for an unrelated reason, and the rattle on startup disappeared, revs when cold slowed too...
If you want to run good oil, try castrol edge synthetic 5w50, on special at supercheap this week for $39/5 litres....you can keep it in the motor longer, and therefore use less filters.
