The crush tube from the rear trailing arm bushes is a bout perfect if you are going to 80 series shocks. So if your rear bushes are stuffed then replace them and pull out the crush tube from the old ones. They are normally torn out anyway.

I got hold of a 2nd set of towers and had them cut and welded (and gusseted) to my original ones to give it a somewhat 'factory' look

Not sure of the OZ rules but in NZ that would then require an engineers cert due to the welding. Other than that, it is a good way of doing it.
