OK here's the latest figures that members might find interresting.

Just put on 37's MTR's.
Still no turbo.
Still plenty of power & acceleration (for a non-Turbo) in all gears.
4.6 difs
60km/hr in 4th at 1400rpm & 5th at 1200rpm. Both feel comfy
100km/hr in 5th at 2100 revs...very comfy
Speed reads 100km/hr...Actual speed 101.5km/hr
1rst gear doesn't scream anymore...almost perfect stroke.

Conclusion...."Love it & couldn't be happier"

Should be impressive on pickup once turbo goes on.

Cheers

Gday Zol
Just tuned into your thread.
I have done exactly what you have with the 2.8-4.2 conversion. Running 35" STTs and the speedo is back about normal. Mine is also nonturbo so far. The revs sit at 2700 @ 100kmh but the grunt is amazing.
I guess the only sacrifice in going bigger rubber is the higher speed of bottom end crawling. The bottom end grunt will certainly give a decent pickup at the bottom end still (although not as good as 35"s) But the pickup from say 80kmh to 100kmh (for overtaking) would probably be up to sh#t. A turbo would probably help a heap (as I am expecting with mine too) but I have always believed that a diesel needs to work. If the engine is not using it's full ref range often, it will tend to accumulate carbon and this can sit in the small oil channels. I guess you know what happens next.
A mate of mine who doesn't use his bus as often as he would like was told by his mechanic to travel home to Collie from shark bay (about 1200km) in 4th and try to keep the revs around 3000. I know!! I raised my eyebrows too. The theory is that the higher revs over a sustained time frees up any carbon into the oil. A filter and oil change when he got home and he says it was like driving a totally different truck. It ran cooler, smoother and the pickup was slightly better with less resistance in the engine. This was all because he never took the truck on anything serous while at home. He only took it out of the carport once a week and even then rarely very far. The lack of revving never cleared the engines oil channels.
Anyway, food for thought I 'spose.
Good luck with the rest of the build & I'd be interested to know how it all ends up.

Thanks Dave. That is great information. Makes perfect sense. 3000rpm would even for me high & that pains me. But you're totally on the mark & would be a great idea to do that. I find I need to rev higher between 2nd & third. That feels like the biggest jump.

Turbo should give that extra kick/pickup but I tell you I am so impressed with the low end tourque on these engines. If I was to try & accelerate from 1000 rpm on my old 2.8 it would shudder to Kingdom come. lol

Agreed
I haven't stalled the engine yet. It gives you alot more confidence to tackle new challenges.
Now with each trip I seem to be constantly raising the bar on what the truck is capable of.
The old 2.8 always seemed to stall right when you needed it most. Scary as hell sometimes. :?
