Hi All,
I've been tossing up the idea of buying a triton 4x4, turbo diese,l manual dual cab, bullbar and towball.
I want to spend in between 15k and 20k i want something 2002 to 2005 (don't like the new shape)
Is their anything i should be cautious of about the triton.
I was also looking at the navara but the triton is a sexy ute and i fell in love with it a while ago.
Any information would be great and even if you find some that are for sale (pref victoria) if not interstate i will fly over and pick up the ute.

3/ broken drink holder, , replaced under warranty

the 5 year/130,000k warranty transferred but the 10 year drive train doesn't transfer.

rear seat leg room isn't much.
bit of a blind spot on the rear passenger side. but the canopy i've fitted made that worse.
curved mirror on passenger side ( good view but a pain in the ass to reverse a trailer with )
not a huge amount of head room ( but i did own a troopy in the past ).
it's got a real throttle with a real piece of wire connecting to the injector pump. i can drive with the throttle doing what i want and not some computer fiddling with the throttle position for me. ( yer i know it costs some fuel economy and power but i'm old fashioned )
apart from that it all seems pretty good.

I had a 99 diesel which is basically the same as the later models without the turbo. Owned it for 4 years and it never broke down but it did have it's share of problems:
- gearbox weak as shat. Mine had 160K on it and whined in every gear bar 1st and 2nd
- torsion bars sag but can be readjusted easily
- loved glowplugs. Had to replace mine every 12 months and there are about 5 or 6 different plugs for the same engine depending on build year and month. Just before I sold it, I finally found the correct ones for my year/month and a supplier-$150 a plug, yes per plug, from an aftermarket supplier
- use your air con on a regular basis- basically my entire air con system had to be replaced because of a lack of use
-spares are hard to come by if you don't live in a capital city and they are expensive compared to some of the more popular utes
- my triton had a permanent lean to one side. Even a completely new suspension setup installed by professional couldn't fix the lean
- don't expect any real flex even from the solid rear (under sprung leafs). Although the LSD works well
-shocking turning circle although this can be improved with the adjustment of a bolt
-most mechanics know nothing about them
-pathetic resale value
I don't mean to sound so negative- I don't regret buying it but if I had the extra cash I probably would have bought a hilux- for the simple fact that parts are so much easier to come by and they hold their value. I don't think they are anymore capable that's for sure. My triton was excellent on fuel. Regardless of the weight the vehicle was carrying it always returned around 10L per 100.
My advice would be to only buy one that has a full service history and thoroughly test out the gearbox and listen for any noises. Also if possible, have a go at starting the car when it is cold- even with the correct glowplugs mine still blew a heap of white smoke.
