drive shaft extension/long slip yoke

Yesterday Ruff and I extended my front shaft, it is the right lenght now. It is fitted with a spicer long slip yoke. I DO NOT have enough suspension travel to cause it to fall out, but it still does, any ideas as is to why?

Are you still running the front trac bar?

If not the springs might be getting so much wrap that they bend enough for the shaft to fall out.

Mine has done it before, when on the gas its fine but when I stopped on a steep hill the front wheels would stay still as soon as I`d hit the breaks but the bake would roll backwards a bit and cause the main leaf to wrap, hence letting the shaft come apart. Other facters helping this to happen were pinion angle and the shaft lenght as it was a tad short.

This is also what i thought may be causing it as well.
When it happened both times we were bouncing the front end trying to get up a ledge and a steep hill.

Run the front wheels up on to the top of a big ledge, get the back wheels about half way up then hit the breaks and see what the front springs do, I`ll almost bet the main leaf will seperate from the rest of the pack and be in an s shape, if the front shaft hasn`t fallen out then it will be very close to it.

make sure u have at least 2 clamps on the rear section of spring packs so as to force the front of the spring to open and not the rear. also u only need 5mm yoke length for every inch of spring travel . measure up travel when on ground and u may find shaft is to short by about 15mm

the shaft does have enough slip, and Guts idea, like tony and i talked could be the only explaination.

Guts, if you were me and i was you, I'd be a toss and you would be a legend, anyway, would you fit a square shaft, stiffer springs or refit the torque rod.


Im leaning toward square shaft at this point

Hi Nick

I Just placed a post for the same subjest without realising that it was there already. So I've wiped it.

I've got a problem with a lack of slip joint length & keep popping my front tailshaft as well. Tho mine is on extreme 'up' angles. As soon as both fronts get air it pops

I thought of re- building a new tailshaft but I met a bloke with a 40 Series at Jackos Lane that recommended a tractor slip joint. He had the same prob & converted it. Had a look. Fantastic. Full depth of the shaft...welded ends onto the standard uni setup & balanced. Square tube is not as good from what I was told. The 2 tubes never match as well....Unless you Mill it to size.

Does anyone know of a place where I can get my hands on this for a good price?

i kept having teh same problem, BUT the instead of rotating the diff, or buying some custom $$$ spline i just made asquare one ;)

im happy with it!

For `tractor spline' ring `Andy's Engineers Pty Ltd' in Mildura Vic (03) 5021 3515

as a rough guide, the shaft is 1 3/8" (O.D.) x 6 (no. of splines)
Comes in varying lengths from 100mm through to 600mm from memory.

Most `Tractor' sales places would have a catalogue of all the stuff they stock.

I don't think it's that expensive if you cut the `middle men' out.

v8 Zuki how did you arrive at that formula, 5mm yoke length for every inch of wheel travel ?
If you know where to go you can get stuff splined pretty cheaply.
The problem I have is the rear propshaft is a slip yoke design (Mitsu copied Jeep) and is the one obstacle in getting serious rear wheel travel.

Just priced some tractor star shaft today, price is $100 for the outer tube and $200 for the inner slip shaft / metre

where did you get that price from?

I work on tractors for a living, try ringing Windsor Farm Equipment, they are a bit slow, as in dumb hicks, but their prices are usually pretty good.

I also have another guy i deal with quite a bit and he is usually cheaper than WFE but he is an old ethnic person and is a bit of a pain. If you you are serious about getting some PM me and i will see what i can do.

I wonder if 1 meter will do both our trucks. Do they sell them in anything else but metre lengths?

Maybe a wrecker or something might be a go. Does anyone know of a place?

For sure. I don't have a choice Mick. I NEEEEED to do it. There is no way I wanna close those spring clamps. And there's no way that a normal slipyolk will travel that much. I've already tried with no luck. I actually split a slip 6 inches down on opposite sides.

As I said...it doesnt have to be new.

BTW Is there going to be a particular way to weld the ends on I wonder?

I run a standard slip in front with out any probs. im runng 9012s and use all.I had same prob at frist but once i got the sharft lenght right i hav'nt had a prob since.I run the sharft with about the slip about 20mm extended.Diff has been pushed 3in forward and rotated so pinion points straight at transfercase. maybe this helps

Yes it comes in varying lengths. You might find that the cheaper option would be to get a 2nd hand slip shaft off a `Slasher' or similar, although I'd go new (but in a shorter length, like 300mm) purley because most farmers NEVER throw stuff out, and anything that was 2nd hand (and up for grabs) would more than likely have very `loose/worn' fits, which would be a problem at high road speeds.

I've only seen the 6 sided ones but not the 3.

Are you able to download a pic Mick?


I would assume that the 3 sided is just chunkier????

How much are you wanting for it? And How long is it?

I can see your point Dave. Your truck seems pretty much set. I on the other hand am still experimenting with front leaves & will prolly change them a few more times so I don't want to be having to keep spending big bucks to re lengthen or shorten it. With the tractor factor it doesnt matter cause the spline will be twice as long.If not more.

BTW Have you measured the actual travel on your front???
I've so far measured about 26 to 28 inches. I'd like to get 30. Looks like I might have to move the shock mount up.

6 spline is the actual shaft that sticks out of the tractor. I am unsure if you can buy 6 spline female by the metre or not. You can definately buy the male though. I will check it out tomorrow.

3 side shaft is what the pto shaft is made out of, same as BJ's box tubing idea but it is 3 sided and a tight fit.

I will take my camera to work tomorrow and snap a pic of both.

I dont know if these will take the torque of a 4wd. I replaced, this afternoon, a piece of 6 spline off a mower that was twisted nearly a full spline width.

You're right I think...The 3 spline wont take it. It's hollow too where as the 6 spline isn't.

I definately think the 6 spline is the go.

Thought of some cool ideas on welding the ends too.

AWESOME! (If they come) Rockwells from the US right? What are you doing about brakes?

I've just put the down payment on 3 sets of axles today. 2 sets are ready and the last set is being prepped up. If Steve/VolvoC303 has time to do me a favour, we should get some spy pics of them soon. They should be outbound next week - fingers crossed.

BJ i remember you showing me that pic once before but it was regarding those shackels.
Have you spoke to the owner of that rig to see how that shaft is standing up because i think i know where to get some cheap.We both know what they are from. I just never noticed what they were using on that rig but have wondered if it would stand up to the punishment.
