TD27T mods... what can be done?
TD27T mods... what can be done?
Hi folks,
I've done a search on the TD27T engine and can't see anything relating to mods on it, aside from chipping the TD27Ti...
..I've driven a Terrano II 2727T and thought it very underwhelming. But this vehicle weighs 500kg more than my WD21 Pathfinder... so I am considering putting this engine into my vehicle. But, what mods can I do to up the ante, so to speak.... without resorting to putting in the much more expensive ZD30 engine?
My goal is comfortable offroad touring and towing. Not a rocket ship.
BTW... I also have a '96 Shogun/Pajero which has a 2.8td engine and whilst it's fine for everyday stuff and light towing, I have found it [with touring gear aboard] slightly underpowered for steep inclines and in deep bog... something I didn't find with my KZJ30 engine LandcruiserII.
Thanks
Harv.

You can add the intercooler from the TDi version and tweak the pump and boost a bit, this gives you about the same power as the TDi.
But if you're in the UK anyways, get rid of the TD27 and buy a 2002+ Terrano with the ZD30. It's the Patrol engine without the Patrol problems and runs great in the Terrano. I have mine for 100k+km's and average 9.5ltr/100km.

i to thought the same thing before actually owning one of the members of the of the nissan td series engines, mine being the 42 versionharvey wrote:Hi Dzltec, thanks for your response. Unlike the newer engines, I didn't think it was possible to up the boost on these older style indirect injected diesels. So i'm wrong. What amount would it be possible to safely up the boost by?

the reason i thought it was the people that got me interested in 4wd's all owned indirect inject toyotas. toyota indirects are built at about half the strength of nissans, so they dont have the potential to be modified as much and last anywhere near as long.
the nissan td series of engines are built very strong and handle heavy mods well.
as far as how much, how big is your wallet??
both motors in the td family have turbos that use waste gates, so winding up boost is done with a manual boost controller. if you do that you need to have the fuel increased as well, otherwise its not doing anything worthwhile.
to help with the original question
you could have the injection timing checked & most likely advanced a bit.
and a better flowing exhaust will make a big difference. i fitted a straight thru exhaust & proper dump pipe (not an off the shelf cast unit) and the difference was like chalk & cheese after.
another worthwhile thing is having the injectors redone with a higher burst pressure
also as with any motor. dont discount a service using proper genuine filters and good oil. get that right and youll at least start on the right foot

Boost pressure settings are a little tricky to say what is best. To give you an idea, a td42t generally runs at 8-9psi stock. With mods and fuel settings we set them to 12 psi, have seen them as high as 18. It all depends on how efficient the turbo is. Small steps first.
Get in on a dyno to do it properly.

Ball bearing turbo upgrades for factory turbo vehicles. Got a diesel question just ask.
Home of the twin turbo shorty and many 150rwkw+ patrols.

TD27t mods, just exhaust boost and fuel. keep boost under 15psi, i think they will be running fairly high compresion so don't wind the boost up a to much.
intercool if you can.
if you are playing with boost, and fuel make sure you atleast have a pyrometer and a boost gauge, i've got 4 pistons from various ZD30's that have that nice hole trough the piston from over boosting,
im going down the turbo path atm, im still waiting on the kit to arrive but i have picked the brains of many diesel performance shop where i live and they all say the same thing, Free Flow Exhaust, Clean high flow intake system, good fuel and service every 5000km on the dot and you will have a motor that will go forever if taken care of, that is the mos important part well maintained vehicles last forever

rear quarters are evil and must be punished with rocks
Sorry to butt in on your post.......I have a Terrano II with the 2.7tdi....I am about to get it DP chipped and get an exhaust done. Should I get a pyro probe done while I get the exhaust? Also with the chip and exhaust should I get the fuel pump and boost done, or do pump and boost mods not work with a chip? Its going on a dyno as well when I get it all done.

(sorry i should have mentioned it before, at leats there is someone whos not half asleep)
with electronic pumps you use the chip instead of adjusting fuel pump.
increaseing boost will be required if you want to add fuel to increase power.
