4wd not working

Post by black stallion »

Hi guys im new to the 4wd scene and to pajeros. i just bought my 1984 swb NA pajero that has a 91 or 92 2.5 TD engine in it. i took it down the bush to see how it went, put it in 4wd but when it was getting slippery the rear wheels would spin up but the front wheels wouldnt spin at all (this was in low range) im not sure if this model had 4wd lights on the dash but i didnt see any light up when i moved the stick...im thinking that either the hubs arn't locking in (have auto locking ones) or that the shaft is just freely spinning in them..im not entirely sure. does anyone have any ideas on what is happening?
Cheers in advance

I had a 1984 wagon which had a single green "4WD" light in the dash.

I'm not sure what triggers the vacuum hubs in the Gen1, but my guess is that some switch somewhere isn't registering that 4wd has been selected.

First step would be to determine if the front prop shaft is being driven by the transfer case - got 4 axle stands?

well i did get some new manual hubs and just put them on 2day, then went and tested them but it still hasnt solved my problem. the rear wheels spin but the fronts dont :x
has anyone else encountered a problem like this before?
and it also got me thinking that the front diff could be worn out and slipping or something. i no a little bit about mechanics but this has me stumped...
any help would be much appreciated
cheers,
sam

Engage the front hubs, securely raise the rear wheels off the ground, engage 4wd and run the engine in 1st, the front d/shaft should turn and so should 1 axle out of the front diff. The axle that turns is the problem side, ie stripped spline, broken cv.
