Still lots of arguements going on about this one since no-one seems to have backed it up with proof.

Early Vitara (manuals) seem to be pretty much all 5.125. There are some EFI LWB ones with 4.625's and 4.875's, although there seems also to be earlier LWB's also with 5.125's.

Later Vitaras seemed to be more the 4.6's and 4.8s... except the softtop/swb which was pretty much 5.125 right thru.

Then we have GV V6's and all that, and autos in there too.

I have a manual and that doesn't even tell me either, and some of the data you find oin the internet is uesless due to international models having different specs :(

Rule of thumb - bigger car, longer diff ratios. Auto - longer diff ratios.

Without some magic or a rockhopper 31"s are still gonna be a gearing ptoblem unless you get a V6 one.

isn't there a way to jack up the rear diff, spin the tyres, and count the number of tailshaft rotations to work it out

That's what I did, jack it up and count, you need to apply the handbrake slightly to get the diffs to engage. Theirs a guy that sells new car flyers on the web if you’re interested in the specs of the model you own but costs about ten bucks including postage.

So an automatic 1.6 Soft-top Grand Vitara would be 4.6 maybe?
