Spring and Shock Combo...

Post by alien »

hey all

I've skimmed the bible, done a quick search and can't see much of what im after...

A mate has just purchased an '85 Hilux 2.4 Diesel... its coil front and leaf rear and he's looking at some lift to clear 32's (with some decent flex in the suspension).

My question is - what is the recommended lift on a hilux to fit 32's (ie: how high do you need to go, im guessing 3"?) and to follow on from that, what spring/shock combo's do you recommend for best offroad performance? (its purely a weekend toy for him).

It will mainly see light mud and very dry rocks... so articulation and ground clearance are critical.

Thanks guys =)

Are you sure about the coil front on a Hilux?

2" lift would be ample to fit 32's under, but if he's after good clearance a 2" body lift wouldnt go astray, worked well on my lux. I used OME gear and work well for me

Well theres no leaves there =) i thought '85 was too early for coils up front on a hilux (surf) but yeah, it suprised me...

2" springs it is... if he gets rubbage then guard trimming or BL will be the go...

Are speedy 15x8's going to be ok or would you all recommend a different rim choice?

i have a surf and with 3 inch lift and with a hammer on the back of the gaurds i could run 33s with good flex and bugger all rubbing.
so a 2 inch lift with 32s should be fine but dont hold back with the hammer!

i had a look underneath the other night, and yeah, its IFS... BUGGER!!!

can still get a 2" lift kit for it though... any recommendations on the front end? my mate wants to keep it cheap as possible and stock as possible (more legal than illegal).

Thanks =)

yeah its odd i know... leaves in the rear, IFS front and its a semi-ute back... fibreglass roof starts behind the drivers head.

how far can you safely wind the torsion bars? surely 2" is a lot for them?

Good question for your hilux.

The later models are cranked up 2" no problem. You may just have to experiment.
