2 pin to 4 pin diff centre
2 pin to 4 pin diff centre
When changing over from a 2 pin carrier in the front diff to a 4 pin am I able to just take out the original carrier & replace it with the 4 pin or do I need to get this shimmed etc to suit?
"85 drover, 1.6 EFi Vitara donk, 2" BL, 2" susp lift, exo cage, 31" BFG muds, 6.5's, lockright rear, birf rings & front locker, soon to be RUF"d
Thanks Jas,
the swap is so I can run the lockright in the 3.7 ratio front diff. I have had 3.9's in there & have blown the rear so with easy to get parts (the 3.7's) I am trying to get it going again with the lockers...
So I am able to just do the carrier swap at home, no need for specialist tools or anything?
Cheers guys

As long as the ratios are the same and you are putting a rear diff in the rear(spline counts are different) it is an easy job to do at home with little more than a few spanners or a socket set.
Drain oil...
Disconnect brake lines. Clamp the flexi hose if you have a brake hose clamp otherwise drip fluid everywhere.
Remove axles...
Pull centre out....
Reverse order to reassemble.

Sorry, I am talking about pulling the carrier that holds the lockright part out of the 3.9 diff centre & swapping it with the 2 pin carrier in the 3.7. So changing the carrier part only out of a 3.9 centre & into a 3.7 centre.
Does that make more sense?

Ok then.
Carrier = The cast iron housing the tailshaft goes to.
Hemisphere = The bit that holds the planetary gears and is encased by crownwheel.
Same process to remove the centre from car.
Then when you have the centre out, loosen but don't remove the two 12mm bolts that hold the lock tabs on the bearing adjusters.
Undo the four 17mm bolts that hold the bearing caps on. Careful not to drop the bearing shells in the dirt. Don't mix up the shells or caps. It is important they go back on the same sides.
Undo the bolts that hold the crownwheel on and swap with your other.
Use locktite threadlocker on the crownwheel bolts (#262 I think)
All just spanner spinning.. Easy stuff.
The only "hard" part is setting the preload and lash when re-assembling.

Okay sorry from my manual it called the hemisphere the carrier....
So if I follow the same steps with it as I did originally, but just swap the "hemisphere" part I should need a diff specialist to reset it all. We punched alignment marks into the original diff to mark it...
Thanks heaps
