No spark in hilux

Post by tuff_surf »

hello
i got a problem with a hilux with no spark it is a 4y 88 model single cab
i have check the wiring diagram and followed it and wired from stock from toyota and i have no power coming out of the coil. I have check the coil on a other car and no problem there i have got power going to the coil but nothing coming out of the coil. What could this problem be

If the coil works then the next logical step is the distributor, since the distributor tells the coil when to fire.

Check the rotor button, cap and points in the distributor.

Silly sounding question but I came across this outside of Alice Springs one time.

Does the rotor button rotate when the engine is cranked.

These people had a broken distributor shaft.

Also does the coil to distributor hi tension lead have continuity and if so is it under say 5 K ohm?

Also check that power remains on the coil once the engine has started.

The easiest way is to run 12 volts directly from the battery to the coil, if the motor runs like this then you probably have an ignition switch problem.

Do you have a ballast resistor wired to the coil?

yes the rotor button spins when the motor turns over
how do you check the hi tension lead
also the engine won't fire at all even with the coil hard wired with straight power
yes the coil has a ballest resistor wired to it and it runs power through it

assuming the coil works, check your wiring going to the coil, check the resistance though the coil lead. turn the engine over with cap off and see if there is spark. if no spark check wiring from coil to dizzy. if spark the coil and dizzy are working fine it is from dizzy shaft onwards. check to see if there is continuity between the bottom of dizzy cap coil connection and top of dizzy cap coil connection, ensuring the carbon plunger is still there. again check resistance of coil lead. few to many bourbons, hope this helps.

plugs
leads
dizzy cap

coil
resister

We made a new earth for the coil and pulled the dizzy its self out, and the stalk if in perfect nick

But i am confused as why i still have no spark.

If possible replace the coil to dissy lead with one of the spark plug leads and check for spark, this will at least tell if the coil lead is functioning.

try and start the engine with cap off and check to see if there is spark at the points and if they are breaking contact.

workshop manual will tell you the exact gap but aim for around 0.019" (0.5mm) gap or around that. If you dont have a feeler gauge and are a smoker, its around the thickness of the cardboard on a cig packet. If you don't smoke this is a good reason to start. :D

Well now after i have set the new gap from around .8mm to about .5mm i have a spark. I was thinking that .8 was to big. But n-e-way So it running but not really well now it is back firing and missing but thanks it starts now i think its just timing now. I run out of light so will have a look tomorrow. So thanks everybody for the help and just goes to show don't take people word that work at these auto places on setting gap and things like that. Thanks again all of yous

So you've gapped your plugs to 0.8mm but what about the points gap?
