89 hilux Q's ?
hey just had a few questions i recentley baught an 89 dual cab hilux SFA 2.8 3L HAD ABOUT 344,000 km's with a rebuilt 291,000 km engine looks clean. just sprayed new tray and interior for 4000$ AU.. Although it has a clicking noise.. dunno if it is the injectors or what but i just had it serviced last week and it has 2 oil leaks 1 was sump plug other was front gasket near timing belt anybody able to tell me what it would cost to get fixed local 4x4 mechanic says 300$ for front gasket. it has a 2 inch lift on it i was wondering stock diffs and gearing be able to run 33's without any problems ?
front gasket near timing belt
The seal is only a few dollars most of what he has quoted would be labour as it means removing radiator all fan belts then remove the crank pulley & outer plastic timing cover then the timing belt and crank gear to get to the seal, also it would be a good idea to change the timing belt & idler & adjuster just in case the belt has been oil soaked. It is a fair job at least a 3 stubbies.

thanks bud i will will look into taking it back to get it replaced if i had all the tools i wouldn't mind doing it myself but just moved out to AU a few months ago from the states ..... love it here... soo much off roading to such little time... if only i could afford som diff locks!!!.... speking of which would it be worth putting in the front .. ? ive heard the front diff locks dont make much diffrence ?
A diff lock front or rear will make a difference. But I believe you get more out of fitting one to the rear.
For the front an autolocker is fine, not so for the rear unless you like chewing up tyres and having it corner funny.
$300 for a front crankshaft seal replacement is pretty good in my opinion. Although it is a fairly straightforward job, it can be slow going and lots of hassles can spring up along the way, like frozen crankshaft pulley bolts, harmonic balancers and crankshaft pulleys themselves.
Re the ticking noise, don't know how bad it is but there are plenty of 3Ls that have some sort of tick in them.
