big uni issues

keep wrecking unis. latest one lasted a week.
is running 31's and an agressive driving style the cause?
or is my tailshaft farked?

Lots of people here run tyres bigger than 31's and don't complain about wearing uni's excessively, so I'd rule that out.
Driving style.. Well maybe but I doubt it.

Maybe your shaft is damaged, maybe it's the way you are fitting the uni's.
Maybe the shaft is binding up at full flex?

i dont think it should be binding at full flex as all my suspension is stock apart from 2 inch shackles.
can i get the shaft inspected or checked for balance?

Are you replacing both Unis at the same time or just the stuffed one. I'm no expert but as these interact it may have some effect

if u punch the cap to far in, it will be overly tight and fail sooner. Thats a lil weird, when u say failing. What is it doing? dropping out? knocking? making a click sound when u got ford to back?

An ear or ears on the shaft are most likley bent.
Will kill unis super quick. Time for a new shaft.

When your putting in the new uni's are you making sure your its got good movement as the caps are squashed in...? Make sure the rollers havent been pinched which can cause a quick destruction. I recently put all new Uni's through mine front and back and a month later Im at the vehicle registry having the annual inspection when the guy tells me my rear uni is close to full destruction....? Whilst I put it down to a bad install some how or maybe of the circlips fell out it sure as hell didnt last long. I put a new one straight in after I got home careful to make sure I definitly didnt pinch any rollers. And it has since been good since. Before I did the rebuilds my last ones lasted over 2 years and they really only had a small bit of play in them I just thought it was a good time to put new ones in whilst everything was out and being done at the time. Make sure they are greased up as well that always helps.

they wreck themselves by brushing all the needle rollers to grit.
my last one actually split the cap.

Are you buying decent uni's or crap from Supershit?
Buy greasable uni's..you know the ones, they have grease nipples, worth every extra cent.
Don't be afraid to add some grease to them after each outing.

How long do they actually last ? 500Ks 2000Ks 50Ks ?
You should be able to go easily 20,000k's between greasings if your not offroading it.

Is it usually the caps that bolt up to the diff or the T/case side of the shaft that go.

Ususally a stock shaft is about $200-$300 second hand.

im looking into hilux shaft in the front of my 91 sierra. i have alot of droop and the unis are going to bind up i think. any more info on the lux shaft? what model?

On stock suspension I doubt that uni's will be binding somehow.

Hmm i might look into the lux tailshaft option for the front also, as either way im going to have to replace it anyway.

i used 86 model ones. the widetrack flanges have the same bolt paten just the locating ring thing is about 1mmbigger on the hilux sharft so i cut it out of the wt flange on a lathe

Yes, you have to cut down the locating ring (little circle bit) on the flange of the shafts. Dont cut the whole locating ring off, just machine it down to match the zook flange.
