Looking for a new engine???

Post by Dalluke »

Hey guys, just got my 2.5L TD Pajero NH back from injector service due to black smoke under load and while it was there got it compression tested and the guy says its fairly low (26kgcm per cyl) and he suggested looking into replacing the engine... scary thought! but just wanted to find out has anyone had issues similar to this with their 4d56 engine and if so where do i go from here?

Where to buy a new engine?
How much?
Where do i go to fit it?

Thanks guys

nope, a short motor is an engine without electrics, ancilliaries or cylinder heads. long motor is same but with cyl heads. what you prob need is the long motor cause most likely your whole motor is getting long in the tooth.

you really have four options, costs vary with how much you do yourself and if you fit the motor yourself
1. rebuild it ($$$ for a diesel, but at least you can tailor the repairs to the motor)
2. exchange it ($$$ for diesel, here you generally get less quality components and work, and you may or may not pay more than teh rebuild)
3. 2nd hand motor (cheapest, fit yourself or get a mechanic to do it, the state of the motor is unknown)
4. sell your car and get another one (depending on what state your car is in, you may get another one cheaper than a rebuild motor)

Back 5 years ago, I had some real bad luck with my old 4D55 whilst I was living and working in the outback of SA. Firstly it needed a brand new short motor, plus new fuel injectors, plus new radiator. Exactly 320kms later, I needed to take the engine back coz it over heated. Now it needed new cylinder heads and everything else that hadn't been touched! After $5500 and about 10 weeks I had a brand new engine (4D56). That engine lasted me for a whopping 97,000km  (NOT) before I got rid of it. The problem was that my engine was consuming about $35 worth of oil per week this was due to poor compression and blow-by. I decided to get a 2nd hand 4D56 with approximately 80,000 to 100,000 on the clock (who knows) and paid $3400 fitted. When my old NA SWB died, I picked up a 1990 NG LWB with a dead engine in it, so I transferred my good working 4D56 from the old NA to the NG (this one is also intercooled). The only mods to this engine are 2.5 exhaust, upgraded fuel pump and increased boost to about 12psi from the turbo. According to the dyno sheet, this gives me 60kw at all four wheels and 591 nm of torque. My NG Paj is still going strong (with the second hand engine I bought) so personally I don't think rebuilding the engine is the best option. If I were you, i'd be looking at a quality tested 2nd hand engine for a fraction of the price of a rebuild.

I bought my NG with a jap import 4d56 with 90,00km on the clock, the wrecker i bought the car off said it cost them $3,500 for motor and fitting.

Haven't had any issues so far, probably has 140,000km on it now, just regular servicing etc.

I have a dead (badly overheated) 4D56-T. Yesterday (first day) I found several engines in Brisbane for $2700-3000 plus 5-600 for installation. All had 6 month/10000K guarantees.
