mq mk reduction gears. i got some.

Post by g60ish »

2 weeks ago i bought a unfinished project mk shorty ute. the cab iks in new blood orange paint. was done a few years ago but hasnt been outside since.
Image it came with a whole bunch of bits. some dobbin coilovers. Image a set of new rs 5000s, a gu powersteering box and pump. a pair of 5 point harnesses, a set of 33" silverstones, a set of sprung over mq diffs, a front mq locker and a 5 speed box. Image this box has a set of reduction gears. in low 1st it spins at 12:1 from what i can find the best nissan offered is 8:1 . please correct me if i am wrong. the box, locker and rs5000s all now reside in my g60 nissan. the ute will be my back up for when i destroy my 60.

I didn't think any reduction was possible in the MQ/MK patrols as the transfer is chain driven......

MQ/MK is gear driven, you could have a cabstar or caball (sp?) gearbox. Marks adaptors used to make kits to put the truck/bus 5 speed boxes in MQ/MK's.

the transfer is gear driven, but due to a lack of room, you cant put reducation gears inside the case.

id suspect that yes he has a cabstar 5spd box

cool that could be right but the box looks very much like my old l28 5 speed.
it is very low in 2 wheel drive though no point using 1st. there is also no adaptor plate. it does crawl very well now. is there any way to tell if its a caball box. i can only go on what i was told and the final drive of the box. combined with my diffs (4.6) i have a final drive of 58.2:1 standard with 4.6 it worked out to about 40:1 thanks guys. oh and i paid $1000 for every thing.

the cabstar box was made in the same factory as the patrol box. it also mated upto the same engines (well the cabstar had an sd33 and a sd22 option anyway). the box will look the same because it is the same, just with a lower first gear

thanks you are most likley right. either way im 25% - 35% lower. idels up stuff at about 200 rpm. and decsents are so slow now. it does feel lower lower then my old marks 5 speed g60 box (which had caball gears) but could just be old tcase was higher.
