Anyone seen a cheap TJ?

Post by GODZUKI »

Well,

I have sold "GODZUKI" and Wendy's Astra.

Time to buy a TJ.

I want a cheapy, something that she can drive for about 18 months and then I get to make it a comp car for winch series.

I kept all of the good stuff of the zook - high mount, lights, compressor, UHF, recovery gear etc. all of which will go on the TJ.

But right now i need a TJ - Auto or manual, any colour - but she wants A/C!!!!!

I have been searching the net but you guys might have driven past one or at auctions etc. I am in Brisbane but i will fly south and drive it home if it is interstate.

I have up to $18000.00 but that depend upon mods - not k's (I don't care)!!!

The less i pay the more i have to spend.

Thanks in advance if anyone knows of one.

Sam,

That's exactly what I am after.

Their was one in a yard at Parramatta for $14500.00 but it's sold.

BTW - Does anyone know if the auto in a TJ is any good - would it handle a winch challenge. Or should i go the good old manual (FRY THE CLUTCH)?

Both the Auto & Manual trannies in the TJ's ahve seen a bit of comp life - so pick whichever you prefer.
Look trough the trading Post (online) and you'll find loads of TJ's....generally they've kept their value pretty good, but certainly for $18k you'll get a good one......possibly with some mods already done too....

Yeah, Craig Cooper is going to look at one this arvo.

It is a 96 manual with air, 160 k's but it has a full rancho lift with in cab adjustment big BFG tyre and nice alloys. In Croyden.

One is Brisbane is a 97 black auto with air and is a low rider. No mods accept some dodgy black and red alloys. But this only has 67 k's.

Both are $17K.

If it was me and I was looking at winch comps I would go for an auto.

I have a manual. I replaced the stock manual after 5th gear clapped out with a NV4500 tranny (manual with granny low), but now I wish I had have gone with an auto instead.

Hey Matt I'll give ya $50 for that clapped out NV4500 if you wanna upgrade to an auto ;)
BTW I agree with matt I think the Auto is better for comps - but remember the pre2002(?) only came witha 3spd auto....

From a US 2000 spec guide, the 3 speed ratios are
1st 2.74
2nd 1.54
3rd 1.00

After a lot of googling, found the specs on the 42LRE (4 speed)
http://www.off-road.com/jeep/models/2003/wrangler/specs.pdf

1st 2.84
2nd 1.57
3rd 1.00
4th 0.69

Diff ratios should be 3.73 for all auto's (lazy 3.07 for manuals :( ) and the transfer case should be the same NP231

I have heard but not confirmed that the 4 speed auto is longer making a SYE almost mandatory for even small lifts - you would have to check this out more.

I wish I had got an auto...maybe this is the long term future

so I take it no one has seen an bargains?

It amazes me how much the prices differ...

take - a 97 black auto with air and alloys - 67000k's - $17 990.00

- a 97 grey auto with air and alloys - 84000k's - $23 999.00

both are in car yards.

The grey one is in better cond. but not 6 grand better.

The dealer prices are all over the shop at the moment - maybe they are trying to cash in on the summer topless look ? :)

I did post this one on the wet tj thread last week

Found it in the tradingpost.

Yeah Matt

I phoned about that one first but it had gone.

I checked all papers today and nothing...

They are cheaper in Melbourne but not many of them have air and it would cost me close to $1 grand to get it back up here.

Well - Got the new toy home last night.

the jeep itself is perfect, I am very impressed. But what a difference from a zook to this. I can see the offroad potential these things have already. HOW GOOD IS THE STEERING!!

I will have to order a body lift and some wider flares so i can put the 33's on it.

Pull off the TJM bar and fabricate a new one for the high mount, front locker and then start competing again!!!! (Maybe not until the other half gives me the green light for the comp. stuff.)
