V6 4Runner fuel economy
Does anyone know of ways to improve the fuel economy of a 91 V6 Runner, currently getting about 350kms per 65l tank
thats pretty typical of that model 3vz-e (i think) The usual mods would be exhaust & air intake mods (would only get you minor improvements) but the best thing would be to take it easy on the loud pedal.

I didn't think there was a whole lot that could be done, Will look at getting the exhaust done and air filters etc..... Maybe get a retune too, wee how it goes

I am running 33's on my 4runner and getting around 330 k's round town and close to 400 on hwy use. Only mod i have is an electric thermo fan which helps. Intake is in the books and eventually exhaust too but havent got there yet. Apparently the intake silencer mod gives a huge increase in performance and a definate change in economy...

If i was you i would be getting a set of extractors for your car mate. Along with the extra power you will pick up dramatically improved economy. Ive got the 5vz-fe and standard i was getting about 400-450 out of a tank and when i swapped the original headers out for a set of extractors and a higher flowing exhaust system it bumped it right up to 550 km's per tank and then the fuel light would come on. Not to mention the extra power that comes with it.
Its such a big improvement because the original headers are so restrictive. If you have a look at your normal exhaust headers you can see they are built for everything but flow. The 1uzfe is the same and shows dramatic improvement in power and economy with a set of high flow headers and an exhaust.

i heart my hilux

ISR removal
So i went ahead and did the ISR mod. Looks a treat, only set me back around $100 all up and thats for all the bling stuff. Proper rubber 3 inch seals, a nice half inch brass elbow and rubber gromet, and a nice mandrel bent 3 inch elbow for the flow. Improvement i would say is definately worth it. Feels like I've gained around 5-10% more power on acceleration and more down low between 2-3 grand. and like you said has a nice throttley burble under full load. Time will tell on the fuel consumption, am doing a decent hwy trip in the next couple of weeks with it so will keep you posted. Other dramatic increase came from setting up my thermo properly.
Turns out i had the temp sensor wired in wrong and it was cutting in at 40 degrees celsius instead of around 85. So instead of running half the time it was running most of the time and making the alternator work overtime. When i changed it round, (yes im an idiot) it runs half as much, stays at perfect operating temp and increased mileage by 30-40 k's per tank. So hopefully with all this done i'll be looking at a steady 450 km's on the hwy.
And this is with standard gearing running 33 inch tyres.
