New MQ T/Diesel owners questions

Post by Shark »

Hey people, some of you might remember i have owned a couple Mq's before but this is the first Turbo diesel i have owned. I did ask wether it was worth buying a MQ again and although i was leaning towards a GQ i took the route that involved no debt:)

I do have a few questions im hoping you guys might be able to help me with..

This wagon has sliding rear side window and the seals are pretty old and falling apart. Can i put normal non sliding windows in instead. Seems alot easier than trying to fix these ones.

Also the rear window has a seal along the bottom that needs replacing, where can you go apart from nissan to get replacement seals..

It has a ticking sound coming from either the engine or gearbox or something, i would say its something to do with the drive line because if u put it in nuetral it goes away It is a very even ticking sound if that makes sense, that gets faster the more the revs go up.. Sorry if thats sounds vague..

This car also has a CAV filter, are they worth leaving in as where the pipes have been cut it seems to be leaking a bit, just wanted to know if it was worth leaving in..

Will a 3" exhaust and straight through exhaust be really loud?? I want a decent exhaust for it but i dont want t to be too loud, i eventually want to install a intercooler and so forth...

And one last thing, it has standard suspension, that has sagged a fair bit, not that that bothers me but the front is about 1" lower than the rear. Anyway i can raise it a bit without the huge dollars that go with new springs. I wanna keep std springs and then install 2" BL and 2" shackles and 33's..

Thanks in advance guys

For the window seals try Rare Spares but they arn't cheap either.
I have a non turbo SD33 that i just got a couple of months ago and the extended shackles are great for cheap lift when you cant afford new springs (like me). I picked up a cheap set of 35" tyres and have just fit them on with a guard cut and the shackles thats it.. I would just do the shackles and the 33" tyes but no body lift as it seems to be alot of trouble for nothing much..

Just my 2c.

Craig

PS my Mq ticks from the gearbox somewhere aswell.. i just turn the stereo up! They are 26 y o cars of course they make funny noises

id just do a body lift to get 33's to fit!

It will make doing the intercooler piping so much easier too

OKay so far im pretty sure im gonna do a 2" body lift followed by getting my front springs redone or whatever its called so they are inline with the rear as they have sagged a bit and then some 33's and then maybe a small shackle lift.. What is the difference between sticking 33's on a 15x10 and a 15x8??

Rear windows will stay as they are for now and then i will change them when the rust needs to be repaired, will be a while yet i would imagine..

So a 3" ehaust with a str8 through muffler will be okay?? Seems some of you guys are not running mufflers at all, i would still run one just a str8 through, dont want it to be super loud, would annoy me on a long trip.

Seems a bit strange that someone else has that ticking noise and no one knows what it is, im gonna do a fluid change and see if that helps..

Anyone know if the A/C tensioner pulley is supposed to turn when the air con is off or on?? I cant remember as mine doesnt move..

Cheers for your help so far, im loving the fact im in an mq again!!

the ticking noise could be the handbrake drum. could be debris between the drum and bash plate as it turns and its causing the ticking sound.

3" zorst and a hot dog would suffice for your patrol mate - put the hot dog at the rear of the exhaust and you should be swoit! i recommend mettams in midland to do the exhaust.

does the noise go away when if you turn the engine off and roll in gear?

if so, exhaust manifold gasket will be shot, very common, the cast iron warps and needs to be faced and refitted with new gasket

drive along...say 4th gear 70ks...leave the car in gear and kill the ignition, does the noise go away? is it only under throttle that the noise is there?

I would do a oil change, see if that gets rid of the ticking, as you get a ticking noise when the oil needs to be changed.
then again don't know what it sounds like a recording maybe?

Maybe a gearbox oil change as well.

OKay i did the turn the car off and coast thing in gear and im pretty sure i still heard the noise being made, not 100% sure but pretty sure. IM gonna service the gearbox and see if it changes, tbh i have a feeling i think you a re right regarding the exhaust manifold...

So does the air con tensioner pulley spin or does it stay still?? I thought it would move, i cant remember..

Oh and are diesel fuel lines under pressure before they reach the injector pump..
