Fj40 electronic ignition options
Hi there, I am investigating options for electronic ignition for a 79 Fj40.
Sofar the only viable options are
1) Pertronix kit (I got the right number for my Nippondenso dizzy off Pertronix guys) and Flamethrower coil (blk, oil), cost approx $220AUD incl postage. I know there is also Piranha but they have an external box & I'd like to avoid that.
2) brand new distributor as advertised on EBay, rather expensive esp since the AUD is now like 66c US (!$@%^#$!) -0 approx $440AUD incl postage.
1) is cheaper BUT I have the same old dizzy mechanics of crs
2) is double the price but I get a brand new dizzy, coil INCLUDED in the cap (yeah you heard right). Dunno how that coil compares to the Flamethrower.
Any suggestions, pro / cons other than i can think of? The FJ40 I am rebuilding will be a fun / workhorse car, used occasionally.
Also if you know of other options pls post them. I can add the links is people are interested, it took me a while to find these out, all posts said there were no electronic options for post '78 FJ40s.
Many thanks

I have older 70 series (3f powered)
I run the pertronics ignition in the stock dizzy, works a treat
I use some GT40R bosch coil, and good leads, seems to work well.
I chose the stock dizzy with pertronics as i figured if my dizzy dies a stock one should be cheaper to obtain a replacement.
I also get pretty good lpg mileage since the change 20l/100.
I explored the new dizzy route too, it was much dearer, so I went for the electronic ignition pertonics offer.

ive got a oldschool electronic conversion box hooked up to a stock dizzy
Ultra Transistor ignition UTI-6000S WHATEVA that means
works great made starting heaps easier only 4 wires to run and its set and forget
im also running straight lpg and 10psi boost on my 2f and its ran without a hickup in around 2 years (9 months with turbo)
ive got a procomp cdi unit that i brought to replace it but sofar i cant fault the uti unit so i havnt bothered
check ebay i picked up the unit im running for 50bux

Yeah, what I'm thinking that a brand new dizzy will NOT die - while a 30 year old one might as soon as you're finished rebuilding ... the EBay HEi dizzy is not as expensive as others I saw listed; for double the amount you would pay for a new pertronix + new Coil you get everything new and no need for an external coil... But somehow i have this feeling the spark may not be that good as with a flamethrower, but really I have no facts to support that. And yeah if it dies (why would it, it is all new), you are stuffed.mlowe76 wrote:I have older 70 series (3f powered)

My 2F-ETI 40 is running an electronic dizzy from a 3FE out of an early 80 series, but with triple coil packs and wasted spark and ignitor. The dizzy is just used for timing now. Not sure how you would control it without the 3FE 80 series ECU or a stand alone ECU. The 3FE dizzy is just a stright swap though.
Also made a custom water proof cap
Old cap and new cap.

[quote="RN"]So do you support your local vendor...not if it is going to cost me almost double. [quote]
I run a modified VK EFI dizzy in my 3F, the base has been machined, fitted with a O ring, extended shaft and cruiser gears with a cruiser CAP. Good thing is they are cheap, parts are everywhere and two wires to hook i up. Had my car in some deep water and hasnt missed a beat.
Also have a 3FE electronic dizzy too if anyone wants to it have a play.
