70 front axles vs. 80 front axles

70 front axles vs. 80 front axles
What's the difference? I've seen some 70 front axles that look like FJ80 fronts, but look like they have a four bolt top cap, where the 80's only have a two bolt top cap. Has any one ever tried to swap knuckles from a 90's model 70 to an 80 to try and get high steer? Does anyone have a link to highsteer for either one of these axles? I've been searching this for a few days, and haven't been able to find anything out, and could use some help.

I have put 80 series knuckles on 79s diff housing no probs (convert to six stud)
dont know if this is any help with regard to the earlier 70 series stuff though
pretty sure the 79 series has a 2 bolt top plate like the 80

Not sure how similar they are but my bundera front diff (from RJ70) has same 8" high pinion front diff as 80 ser. and 4 bolt top & bottom steering arms on knuckle.
Think the axels and CV's may be smaller dia. than the 80 ser. as well as the 80 ser. swivel hub bearings being larger than the 70.

This is what I have observed in pulling various trucks apart
there are two diferent types of knuckle(swivle hub) assy
the first is smaller and has 4 bolts top and bottom and is found on,hilux(toyota pickup for you US boys),bundera , early landcruiser ie 40s,55s ,60s,70s till the first update in about 1990
the second larger one with bigger cvs and 2 bolt top was fitted into the 75 when the 4.5 and 1hz were fitted this is also when the high pinion was fitted in the 75s
the big swivel hubs with the 2 bolt top were fitted to 75s(1990 on) ,80 series ,105s ,79s,78s
there are some small variatons even within the two groups but they are minor .ie 79s has diferent stud patern and diferent setup to suport the cvs

I can get high steer that will clear leaf springs for the 70 series trucks here in the U.S., but not for the 80 series because of the two top bolts. if the knuckle for a 75 will fit an 80, it would solve alot of problems.
Mule is correct. Where the difference lies in the 75 series is when the HZJ75 came around. The CV was made ever so slightly larger in the bell area but the Swivel its self never changed throughout the 75 series. The 79 series is an entire different animal. Although i have never actually done any work with one im lead to beleive the swivel is interchangable with an 80 series. But this only acheives a 6 stud conversion on the 79.
All you need to use is the 100 hub,disc and calliper and its 5 stud...but then you find the splines on the constant c/v are different, and you need to run 78/79/105 free wheeling hubs to mate the 80 c/v...no big deal.RUFF wrote:Wally would know for sure. I converted A 79series to 6 stud it was so easy i could not beleive it
All i did was take the whole lot off an 80 (big brake model) (swivel hub out) and bolted it straight on
no mods just bolt up action it would be the same for a 105
Hey if you do this I may be interested in everything you bolted off (all the 5 stud stuff)

Yep you can swap them around.
