steering noise per twank tink sound

I can feel and hear this sound, while going lock to lock under pressure, eg reversing out of a car park, then full swing the other way.

I recently put a new king pin/swivel hub kit thru it, recoed wheel bearings (usual source of this noise) and replaced a dinged drag link/tie bar.

But although it drives very nice now, it still makes the noise.

It is hard for me to sense direction of sound, and hard to reach areas to feel while at the steering wheel :roll:

Power steering box (vitara type) has been leaking for a while, and is at the end of its adjustment.

Could this be the problem?
I can feel it at the steering wheel.

While motor is out, probly a good time to do it anyway.

I should just get all my money sent to suziworld :D

could be the diff centre too... my rear did that when i busted it.

That is the type of noise, similar to a uni on its way out.

but I am almost sure its up front.

lock rite still working but hubs aren't locked .

I would guess it could, depends what breaks.
Even metal filings from crook bearings can do damage.

Never broken any front diffs.

Only done 2 rears in 15 years of zookin.
Rears a cig locker anyways ;)

have you checked the wheel bearings are tight? cant rattle the wheels around etc... check nuts are done up on the wheels and draglink/tierod is all snug? maybe take out the power steer box and put the old one back in to eliminate that?

Yeah I done all that, even changed drag link and tie bar.
Bearings did need attention, also the stub axles got changed, and that normaly fixes that noise, but not this time.

Maybe its always been there, I can just hear it better now. :armsup:

I not sure if I could fit the old one back in, it was pretty shagged anyway.

i put it down to the pressure of the 31s on the steering box etc...

have you checked the steering column to see if it has any damage or loose bushes supporting the steering shaft.

my theory on hard to find stuff is to drive it till it brakes,
then it is easy to find. ;)

i had a similar knock/thunk.. turned out it was the hard line for the passenger side brake was rubbing on the draglink. must have gotten bent up from a stick or something..

I'm with you two on this one :lol:

Does it make the noise while the vehicle is rolling or stationary? If it is stationary then it would be steering related and not driveline, if rolling then could be either. As already suggested it's probably just the extra load of the 31's on the front springs.

Does it when stationary. And rolling.
More noticeable at lower speeds.

i think shackles - mine was exactly like that when i neglected to tighten mine up enough - check the u-bolts too =)

Wasn't the shackles, or loose u bolts, but it made me look in the right place.
I got the nice neighbor to wiggle the steering wheel, while I was underneath.
The drivers side 2nd spring was moving sideways against the main spring.
Rust wasn't helping either.
Friction pads wore out yonks ago. :oops:
The loosened off spring clamps had stretched out further than was good, maybe from extra travel?
Bit of grease and tightened the clamps a tad, and all is good.
It saved me wasting money, tho a new steering box would be wise, it can now wait.
Cheers everyone for input, I now got lots of good front end stuff :armsup:

my cruiser does that.second spring moves and and hits against pack clamps, christover while your in the front pull the pack apart wire wheel, file edges and grease springs, a new centre pin and forget those front clamps it will make it quieter and flex a little more

yeah that would have been costing you some flex as well as a bit extra stress/ wear at the shacke bushes etc good to see you a firm believer like me in the fact that you can never have to much grease a little hijack here what donk are you going now

Since greasing and servicing the front suspension, it's been handling much better. :armsup:
Lost it's stiffness that I was blaming the shox for.
(Sounded worse from a rattling roof, too)
So I've refitted my brand new OME shox, and removed the extra bumpstop spacer, that the commo shox needed.
I'm very happy with the ride and travel now, on and off road.
Why did I take so long to notice the rusted up springs :roll: :roll:
Must have had my mind in wrong gear last year. :oops:
I'm pleased that OME shox are still good products :armsup:
