Laminova Cored Intercoolers (Home Brew 2. GQ TD 42 )

I'm having the same headache about the Water cooler and space issues in a 4.2 GU wagon. Got highmount winch cut back into the grill so no space up front and dual battaries, was thinking large top mount cooler with twin bonnet scoops and perhaps thermos under it to suck when slow speed and scoops to push at high speeds... Perhaps also a resivour tank under the under carraige passanger side but concerned about potential damage down there to a tank!!
Any thoughts?

Had time to look under the bonnet of a GU today but it will be next year before we make a start.
Need to complete the 4 core BMW and 8 core for Dzltec not to mention the LS1's 12 core unit. As well as the Generic GQ.
But after looking at the GU I think both the GU and GQ generic ones will be pretty much the same.

Shouldn't bee too different thats for sure. The only concern in the GU is space for the water heat transfer/cooler. I am stongly leaning towards twin bonnet scoops up close to the fron of the bonnet (where the horse bit the paint anyway!!!) and then run a top mount cooler with twin thermos under it...matt.mcinnes wrote:Had time to look under the bonnet of a GU today but it will be next year before we make a start.

Yeah this time of year is BS busy, i'll be in touch in early 09 for updates on the GU cooler Keen as!

from a 4wd perspective, i can see the benifits, but from a race car/street car... well were yet to see. I'd defently have one on the patrol, but wether i can justify the expense one my street car, is yet to be explored.

I expect the BMW to spool up faster with less lag due to the short flow paths and air volume of our intercoolers as well as less pressure drop over air to air. So off the line it will be much quicker with the intercooler working from the word go and making full boost quicker. A FMIC if it is sized correctly at optimum speed/cooling will be marginally better but by that time all you will see is the dust of a Laminova intercooled car But what do I know everyone told me my intercooler would never work

Oh and the run to work tonight, usually hit 26C post intercooler temps just cruzing, 6C cooler tonight only 20C after finally getting around to bleeding the air out. Still expext the same small rise at full boost but should cool down even faster off boost now.

Marin ordered a few bits which arrived this week to reconnect the Turbo and hook it up to the intercooler. He's still in Perth though
I originally fitted a TD42T air box but the ZD30 has a better air flow with a slightly less restrictive feed out so it seems. But rather than change the whole air box I just swapped the tops
The ZD30 is however much easier to work with as it has a flange you can bolt too. The TD42T outlet is slightly bigger than 3" making it more difficult. I picked a 3" flange up from Autobarn and re drilled the wholes to suit, easiest and cheapest solution.
2.5"-2" Reducer connects the intercooler to the Turbo via a 135 Degree bend, although it's close I think a mandrel bent 2" pipe will look better and give a smoother flow. It pulls a little on the reducer.

The inlet from Marin's TD42 Mav will be used now to build our generic bolt on 4 core unit along with the head and rocker cover we already have to aid set up. All cleaned up and ready for the maestro and his welder

Took Marin's to DzlTec today for its second run on the Dyno. This time with the intercooler in place but without the water hooked up. The aim was to see what if any changes had accrued prior to cooling.
Power difference was negligible. Slightly more lag due to the larger plenum but still minimal. So all in all no great changes though Andy at DzlTec said it ran leaner with the new intake.
Testing Andy also took MAP sensor readings pre and post intercooler. See graph.

I have to say, I am impressed how well Matts i/c works and keeps inlet air temps constant. Over 6 consecutive runs the inlet temps only raised 3 degrees c.
It also goes to show that you don't need high pressure loss to provide cooling to inlet temps.
I also love Andrews welding.
Will be great to see these all finished and fully tested to show just what works and what doesn't.

I first came across the Laminova cores by chance here at High Flow a local East Melbourne company while looking for a Jet Hot Ceramic coating for my headers.
They quoted me $3000 for a 3 core unit using smaller cores.

I did mine up the same way (2" steel pipe from turbo to 2"/2.25" reducer to cooler barrel) - figured higher gas velocity couldn't be a bad thing and the cooler barrel may have some more 'expansion chamber' effect?
In practice, there's probably not much in it!

2" Pipe smaller diameter marginally less lag, better performance or better economy depending on how you drive. The smaller you keep your intake volume the better.
I always assume the Turbo manufactures have done there home work as to out let size.
