hey guys just thaught ide share some crap news, was driving down the highway doing 110km after about 15 mins she locked up, thankfully the clutch was rooted and the tyres didnt lock up just the clutch slipp and some mad drag. just before the temp gauge shot op to H and before i could slow down it was all over.

now that it home and cooled down u crank it over it starts n runs on about 4 cylinders and is sprayng diesel mist out the intake manifold before turbo (turbo is a safari kit put on 3 weeks ago and tuned.)

my educated hypothisis is that an injector has failed, dumping heaps of fuel into a cylinder and upped the internal combustion chamber temp and seeya later charlie. ill no tomorrow night when i tear it apart!!

And another old motor with a turbokit attached to it bites the dust.

Not unheard of.

Its why I'm in no hurry to drop a turbo onto the side of my 270,000km old TD42.

The vehicle isn't worth an engine rebuild to me.

old engine or new some time they just don't like boost we had our full reco engine split the block on the way to cliffhanger this year coolant got in and it was all over we were just cruisin a long and it went bang egt was about 380 that engine had about 19000km :x :x on it yet the original engine had about 280000km and the turbo was fitted at 90000km it is also common for the head bolt to stretch

id be stoked if its just blown a head gaskett.

its deffinatly worth fixing mate the car has a about 5k of suspension and rims n tyres. and everything is new under it.

were you towing a trailer?

mine sits on about 250 at 100, maybe 300 at 110km/h (33 MTZ, 4" sus, 30mm body lift) and thats with a real small exhaust housing too.

So guys based on your experience and taking in count this example of engine failure, you think is not safe to turbo a TD42 with near 350K???

did mine at 380 000 only running 10psi, seems to be going strong, i dont drive it hard, never have cause i know she is old. Its been on there for 6 months so far no dramas, i had the engine checked over though, tappets adjusted, all measurments taken, valve clearances checked, had the big end and bearings checked, i assumed i may need an engine rebuild, i was basically told that it had been looked after so well since day one that nothing was out of spec. Im only the 2nd owner of the GQ, as a Ma and Pa kettle owned it before me and treated it like royalty.

Honestly IMHO, i believe the only way to avoid catastophic failure is to have the motor checked over before you do it, and avoid excessive boost, unless of course you have the cash to keep rebuilding motors :twisted: :P

I agree, before fitting the turbo kit you could do a compression check. I would pull the sump off to do the turbo oil drain, so why not through a set of big ends and mains into it.

I bolted an AXT to my 1990 leafie at 260K, has since done the Simmo in late October in 40 degrees, now has 312K, no problems at all. Famous last words....

Am about to bolt a Denso top mount and an IC to my 1989 LWB with 360K. We will see.... :twisted:

Yes it seems that all depends on how the engine has been looked after. Do you guys think that a low compression engine could give another signs that will let you know about the issue?

low compression indicates ring bypass, if the compression is on the low side I would check the bores and re-ring the motor.

A mate just pulled the head off a td42 with 560,000km on it and it still had hone marks in the bores.

They are a understressed motor and will run happy aslong as they are serviced.

A mates dad had a farm and had 960,000km on a 1996 td42 ute, still ran fine when he sold it.

Mine also went after 16,000kms after a reco, no special rebuild just standard.
Might of been the boost i was running :roll:

This time will get built up for the boost me thinks :lol:

How much boost? Its not normally the boost thats the issue but fuel.
