Hilux engine/diesel conversion
I've recently gotten a Hilux and tbh the standard 3Y 2L petrol motor is nothing to sing and dance about.. It's a little bit gutless.
I pretty much want to put a diesel engine in it for several reasons. - efficiency, torque and waterproofness. Far as I gather it's alot easier to run a diesel underwater than it is to run petrol, on account of the ignition system and whatnot.
Has anyone successfully converted a hilux to something like a 1HD series motor, like out of an 80 series (i think) cruiser?? will I need to competely rebuild the whole engine bay etc or will it be moderately easy to mount?
Other than that, what year 'lux's had decent diesel motors that I won't need a new gearbox over??
-A mate of mines got a 3800 buick (out of a VN commodore) and it hauls arse. I want similar arse haulage, but I don't want to konk out everytime I hit a puddle

Get a 1kz (3ltr turbo) they have the same output as a 1hz but are 4cyl and fit easy just need the wiring sorted(i have done many times)
you will need to upgrade to a r150 gear box but you would have to no mater what you do if you want it to be tough
heaps of power and good on fuel
pretty much the best 4cyl toyota diesel
for power and economy
if you were really keen you could track down a D4D

If your going to get a diesel i'd stick with a mechanicly controled injection Any engine with the E on the end of the engine code has alot more electronic's in it and cost alot more to do the conversion i'd look at a 3rz 2.7L will do it for less than half the cost of the diesel and more power aswell.
plenty of parts on the bench
I have found that the diesel engines with E on the end are a lot cheaper ,a lot newer, usally less km than their older mechanically injected cousins and that is without mentioning the extra power or fuel economy
it works out that the 500 bucks you pay in wiring is made up for in the cheaper buy price of the E type motor
there is not any mechanically injected equals to the 1KZ
the closest is a 2LT and they are not in the same leage
there is no more wiring than would be involved in fitting a 3RZ plus you dont need to add efi pumps or change the fuel system it would just be a matter of draining the tank and filling it with diesel
as for power the 3rz has just over 100kw the 1kz 96kw but the torque is a diferent story the 1kz has heaps more usable torque
the 1KZ has greater resistance to water than the 3RZ the 1KZ no hi tension ignition to worry about and will run under water no problem.

ferrit on this forum swapped a 1KZ-TE in place of the old 3L 2.8 hilux diesel.
Although it was diesel to diesel, it was certainly not a bolt-in job and I think he said it ended up costing over $10,000 and he did a lot of the work too (But that might have included everything - transfer and box swap).
If you do a search, you should be able to find his thread on the build-up on this forum or the overlander one if it's not here.
You might be better off just selling up and repurchasing what you want.

I did one 6 months ago took me 3 days and $4000 dollars including gearbox new clutch and flywheel
gearbox mounts bolt straight up just need new engine mounts
you can move them on the rails or fab up new ones for the block
its not hard
but i am pretty quick i did a 100 series FTE into an 80 in 2 days including wiring the guy at wreckers could not believe it when i drove it in on monday after taking the motor and loom on friday

hey fellas...
it seems you need someone with both opinions.. i had a diesel in my lux, have driven the d4d and the 5lte/1kzte, they dont go that well? the d4d does but the rest not so well, i had a 2.8 in my lux, alright tourque, fuk all power, good economy, and yeh, you dunk it in a river? Who cares about dunkin cars in rivers unless your malcom douglas?
I turfed the 2.8 and got a 3rz, geed up a nice clutch ect ect, got to work on it firday arv, was running by sunday morn with the help of two mates, and thats diesel to petrol. I dont care what anyone say, the 3rz is far better than and hilux diesel. They have a fair bit of tourque, 152 horse standard, wich is easily added to. I have done over a blokes 3.8v6 powered lux in straight line drag a few times, it shits on my old boys prado td and still can put away a few ricers on the road.. Then come offroad you can crawl well, goes to liek 500rpm b4 even thinkin about stalling, or on hils ect you have 6000rpm;s to play with?
long story short over 5 grand to set up a decent diesel, my 3rz cost me 1900? I know what id be doing. My 2c. Cheers, Chris

but if you put a 1KZ in a single cab leaf sprung hilux they go like a shower i have done 3 of them
have you ever driven a prado with a 3rz they are spam
or a duel cab 4x4 lux that came out with a 3rz
or any of the current (new shape)hiluxes with the 3rz
the surfs and late model hiluxes with a 1kz dont go real well either but put that engine in a leafy lux and it goes great
It's all about power to weight mate
I was answering the question asked
if it were my truck i would not piss about i would just get a 2jz and water proof the crap out of it! 500 hp too easy under water no coil leads
heaps of low down torque and 7500 rpm
but that was not the question
3rz's are a good thing but one will still cost $3000 with wiring exhaust ,efi fuel system and r150 box which is what the $4000 for the 1Kz included

$13,200 so far in my conversion.
But that was $6200 for the 90,000km old halfcut (best way to go about it really)
$1000 for replacement solid flywheel and new clutch
$1100 for two diffs with lockers
$700 for the Warn XD9000 winch
$1250 for the R150 to replace the R151 i blew up.
But god its a hoot to drive!

Why do you want a 1HD in a Lux? Seriously whats the reasoning behind this thinking? My father has put a 4.1L 15BF diesel in his lux and thats only 4cylinders, it takes up plenty of room as it is. I think a 1HD would be near impossible.
Sadly any decent motor will be pushing your standard gearbox to its limits. You should factor in this cost to doing an engine conversion if you want to gauruntee reliability.
Wheeling on completely wicked angles, without even looking stable.
