I'm building a new car and this time its going to be a ute. I need a new set of rear shocks for the back end. It will have a superior long arm kit in it(thanks mick) and i'm not sure if its worth the hassle fabricating the mounts for coilovers.
So the question is...
What is the advantage of coil overs as compared to standard springs with 2.5" king/fox smoothies on a winch truck.

Advantage of coilovers
innovation is better, better is faster, and fast is all that counts
Re: Advantage of coilovers
Much more adjustment built in, higher selection of coil rates to get it spot on, so you don't have to use of the self springs that suit a farm truck.hammey wrote:I'm building a new car and this time its going to be a ute. If you are going to redesign the suspension geometry of the back end
with coilovers maybe think about complementing that long arm kit by throwing the rear panhard rod in the bin and running triangulated uppers or and a frame setup?. just my 2 cents.

cheers Z()lton, your right in that most guys dont run coilovers, however i would like to know what practical knowledge that decision was based on assuming they had the means.
Hey Wes, is it this higher selection of coil rates that makes the tuning of coilovers that much harder. I'm assuming the valving in the shock will compensate for the differences in coil rebound.
What i'm trying to achieve is the most efficent way of reducing the back end of the ute bucking around.
I'm building it from scratch so i may as well get it as right as i can and be done with it.
thanks for the tip on the triangulated uppers Wes, i just gotta see where the pto pump is going to sit.

Billavista tech section on Pirate has a good explanation.hammey wrote:cheers Z()lton, your right in that most guys dont run coilovers, however i would like to know what practical knowledge that decision was based on assuming they had the means.

If the back end of your ute is bucking around, it could have too much anti-squat. Coilsovers can't fix problems with link geometry.

try having a play around with this calculator see if that helps http://f-o-a.com/calculator.htmlhammey wrote:cheers Z()lton, your right in that most guys dont run coilovers, however i would like to know what practical knowledge that decision was based on assuming they had the means.
