motor differences (1298cc & 1324cc)

Post by built4thrashing »

What is the difference between these 2 engines/ They both use the same rebuild kit or so im led to believe so where is the extra capicity from?

What im trying to do is put a sierra head(1324cc) onto a swift block(1298cc). Will the 1324 oil pickup bolt on and sierra sump? cheers

It's a joke sheps, keep your pants on. He's not in the least bit "un zud"

Cj is in NZ at the moment He clearly shouldn't be wasting time with "the tossers" on here.

PS if he's not on outers he's working on his junk in my shed -it's all good.

Steve.

Ps B4T - wasn't having a go at you, only people who can't take a joke.

i could have searched the net for hours to find out what i wanted but askin a question on here is easier and ill get more work done on pulling the motors apart.

can i put some parts from the bigger engine into the smaller one to get a bit extra oomph?

B4T - both engines were basically rated at the same power and torque so you'd never pick the difference regardless of what bits you mixed and matched.

I think the difference was 3Kw and the same torque for both versions. (44-47Kw or something - I don't think anyone could ever pick it)

It had more to do with changes in emissions regulations forcing some tweaks to the motor.

Fuel lines are a different size too, I had to swap over my fuel pump. The newer engine 1298cc smaller capicity engine had, and I say had, more power. That's the only noticable difference I spotted in changing over engines.

Yeah - I've picked that up too (the fuel lines) - Vitara is the same (ie different to early sierra)

I'm sure there's a heap of small differences other the significant ones - the different compression/capacity - like the later motor runs a small black box that controls EGR when the car is in 4th and 5th that's not present in the early motor, but I'd still say any difference in feel wouldbe explained by condition and history not because the motors are markedly different.

Putting the larger head on the smaller motor may give you a lower compression ratio. (less performance ) but you may need to measure the combustion chamber to be sure.
Does the listings for the head gaskets have the same part numbers ? if so than it may fit.
if they do interchange, than the smaller head on the larger block would be a nice performance up grade by raising the compression ratio.

Cj pointed out it was stroke and pistons that made the difference -Are you sure there's any difference in the heads?

I didn't think there was - suzuki aren't ones to mess with heads- eg Baleno, Vitara, Jimny all use the same (16V SOHC) head

i thought the reduction in size was so they were under the 1300cc mark for rally? the 1324 put them into the 1600 category, while the 1298 keeps them in the 1300s.

Can't see it being the case myself - different if it was a homoglation special type of thing though.

Might be the case that there was a registration/tax concession under 1300cc though for road cars- europe has tax concessions under 1.3 I think.

The heads for all intents and purposes are the same.
The gaskets are the same
A 1300 head is pretty well the same casting as a 1600 (8valve) head with different machining for valves.

The main diffrence is the 1324 cc motor was originally the carb motor, the 1298 was the TBI motor (that we still got in Aus as a carb version)

Both engines keep the the same bore size 74.000mm , which would be your main reason they use the same gasket kits.

Your ACL Valve regrind set is DN480/1MT or the full set is GN481MT

There is two different head shims one .8mm the other 1.5mm , if you plan on shaving the head to clean it up, or want to play with compression ratio's slightly.

BN480SS08 -for the .8mm roughly 0.62 decrease in compression ratio

BN480SS15 - for the 1.5mm head shim 1.26 decrease in compression
..wrench, wheel, wreck repeat..

Does anyone know the compression ratios of the two motors ?

The issue though of playing with the heads to increase compression ie by skiming or using a different head gasket is that it stuffs with the valve timing. The further you skim the head, the more you retard the cam timing.

Just food for thought....

in the future im gonna build a supercharged 1.3 so knowing there is a difference in stroke and gasket thickness will help in building a low compression motor.
