Extremely bad fuel economy
My Bundera with a 22R engine (done about 200K) is getting extremely bad fuel economy, which is gradually getting worse. At the moment it is up to 27.5L per 100 Klm's.
I know the 22R's aren't the best engine for fuel economy, but it definatly shouldn't be this bad.
I don't know a great deal about engine's, but what things can I check to find the problem?

damn thats bad... must just be way outa tune.. dont know much about the 22r.. is yours the 22r carbie?? or the re EFI version??
try tuning it, maybe some new plugs.. make sure air cleaner and fuel filter are in good nic.. lol and that u dont have a hole in yr petrol tank.. cause that just seems like 2 much fuel..

it is the carbie model. it was tuned not too long ago and has new plugs and leads, air and fuel filters a good and no visible leaks anywhere. it has exctractors too.
basically getting only 270Klm per 75L - at the point where I can reallly afford the fuel anymore.
i think things like the dizzy cap and rotor button wouldnt directly lead to such bad economy without some other side efects.. how bout some more info blundera, does it run rough?? over/under powered? does it miss at high revs? hard to start in the mornings?

Its your carby for sure, when you start it and go to take off does it nearly stall or does it stall then hard to start.
Mine at moment is stuffed it uses a full tank in 200k`s I need a new choke housing as well as an overhaul so its going to cost me around $600
so I`m thinking maybe geting EFI done mines a 4Y so I can get it out of a Tarago I seen one in the paper for $600 complete.
but with the 22R it would be a bit more.

When I first got it, it would stall very easily on take off, so adjusted timing a bit to make it better. But is still seems to not like take off and feels sluggish.
Acceleration is bad - about 1 Klm/H per 5 seconds when up around 80-100 Klm/H mark and that is with the foot to the floor.
Maybe the compression is worse than I thought and the carby is stuffed too?

Do you have the mechanical/vacuum advance combo? I've worked on mates cars that had seized the mechanical advance on the distributor shaft and the symptoms are somewhat like yours. To test, just grab the rotor button and twist left and right. It should move about 30 degrees in one direction, none in the other. If it won't, rip it out and disassemble, clean, oil and check the advance (without weights etc) spins freely. PS, do it carefully, they can be fragile.

I've got a 22R 5 speed in my dual cab with 31 inch tyres and extractors. It runs fine ( typical gutless hilux ) but uses about the same amount of fuel as yours. Mine has done 175 k's and is in good nick.
I could put up with the fuel economy if the thing had some grunt, but gutless AND thirsty ???

tiger, i have a rough 2F 4.2litre in an FJ40 pushing 35s around Newcastle to and from work. and mine gets alot better economy then your Lux. You have some big issues i think. But is that economy in peak hour traffic or cruising on the highway??? big variance there.

/a Piss off that big block 22r donk and fit that 1ggze thats for sale
/b fix the compression issue to help increase the power
/c fit some other motor IE: 2.8 diesel
/d buy a nice cruiser/pootroll and have all the power / economy you need.
By running lower compression you naturally increase you fuel consumption as you are getting less work from the combusted gasses.
Head extractors and cam work would surely help, but the quickest fix i believe would be a set of gears to let the engine turn a bit easier...

Man, I was getting extremely worried that my 3F in a Soft Top FJ73 (Middie) was getting 200km / 40Ls...
I am looking at throwing in a VR Senator Engine that a mate is selling. I could get better economy out of the V8 than mine now...
That is extremly bad economy, small engine, large car, the compression issue these are all factors, a good freshen up / rebuild would be really good for it, but then again it is still the same old engine, carrying that big old car...
Got for an eight, even carbied 308 would have better economy...

holly crap mt 22R has 222 000 km on it and returns 100km for 14 L of fuel around town all the time, and I was complaining.
I would suggest you have some serious issues in there and that no 22R should be using 27L per 100km. That is like 1L of fuel every 5km WOW!!!!

Hmmm....Having been the proud new owner of a 22r Bundy (well the girlfriend is so that sorta makes it half mine ) to complement my existing 80 series, have just gone through the first tank of juice. Doing only city driving, very rarely gone above 80 and LOTS of stop start driving with the air con on, I just put in 74 litres after 525kms. generally what everyone else is getting..??

got 22r, 210KM's and get about 350-400km's highway driving pushing 33's and high lift etc. Worse around town (i do stick the boot in though) So i think that is about 19L/100k's.
I whinge about it; a lot. I wouldnt mind if it was powerfull or fast or torque or anything but slow, thirsty, and gutless

My advice would be to rule out the easy things that it is not, first.
get the compression tested, doesn't cost much and you can do it yourself

Pull your plugs and check for fouling, are they black, burnt, wet, clean etc
Listen to your engine at start-up, under load (accelerating) at idle after warming up,
Check your oil, dirty, clean, foreign particles present.
How clean is your engine and your engine bay, any leaks. Not sure give it a degrease go for a drive and check again.
Check your carby for cleanliness Blast it with carby cleaner
And don't take all advice your read on the forum for gospel get a second opinion from mechanic or someone else who can see the vehicle, hear the engine and give you a better idea of what you are in for.
You should be expecting to get 13-15L per 100km out of tank with just about any 22R, barring highly modified vehicles of course.

Just back from a trip up the coast in the Bundy...Myself and the missus, fully loaded with camping gear and booze . Did Melbourne-Batemans Bay and some track driving and all that with camping at a few spots along the way...sat on 100kms on the highway with the aircon on...
1724 kms driven : 187 litres used for a figure of 10.8l / 100kms..
