'Rebuilding' front diff on MQ, where do all the bits go?

Post by neRok »

hi,
i am in the middle of doing all the bearings etc in my front diff. i got a kit and its come with some seals and o-ring that i cannot work out where they go. here is the kit i got http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll ... 0125680612 . i have worked out where all the bearings go, i just cant see where 2xlarge o-rings and the 4xseals go in the first pic (one with the swivel hub wipers). are they the seals up near the diff centre?

also, before i started i noticed the the passenger side hub had a little grease on the bottom and the drivers had heaps (like 20mm thick in spots). when i pulled the hubs apart, the passenger side trunnion was plenty full of the grease but the drivers side was nearly all gone. it was also all stained a light brown. i had a peak down the axle tubes with the torch, both sides had a little pool of oil in them but i am thinking because the drivers side is the short side that maybe the oil got into the grease and made it all run out? or could it just be the seals were dodge in the hub etc and the grease ran away. i took the fill plug out of the diff and stuck my finger in, the oil was ~ just under 10mm from the fill hole. the oil was a similar golden/brown colour to what i saw in the trunnion.

whilst i am talking about the front diff, i have read you can use the gq cv's in the mq housing. just to confirm, if i get the gq cv's and the gq free wheeling hubs, i will have everything i need to do the 'conversion'. and how do i get the cv off the axle, i have seen a vid on youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTooPkTAmIk) where you put a tube over the axle and bang it on the floor (also read it on here). how big does this tube need to be and what should it bare on. i can see a clip on the axle, im guessing i would need a tube with a bigger id than this?

thanks for any comments.

can anyone help?

after a bit of reading around on the forum, i think the oil seals at the centre need replacing. is there an easy way of doing this? can i just pull the centre out, change the seals and just put it all back in exactly the same and not worry about setting the backlash and all that, or is that essential? also, is any of those mystery seals i have the oil seel?
