Hi Cokeman

I THINK the gearbox is different to the 4.2. You may have to get a 4.2 gearbox and transfer case. I remember reading that the RB30 gearbox isn't as strong as the one on the 4.2 engines.

most of the drive train is different gearbox transfer, drive shafts, the 3.0l transfer willl bolt to a 4.2 box but the shifter linkages are different and the flanges on the drive shaft seem to be different. if your going to the effort its probably not much more to drop in a gen 3 v8, use less fuel and go a lot harder :D

stuff getting a v8.

i've been looking at droping out the 4.2 and throwing in a rb25det skyline motor.

Your gearbox isnt as weak as you think.
They are the same gearboxes that are used in the 300zx with twin turbos.
So just read into what you getting.

The rb25det has about 100hp more with a little tweak (about $500 worth) and you end up with just under 50 Nm les torque. but 1000rpm later.

This means that you need to change into low a little earier off road.

Also the big catch with this. you can get a Rb25det recon'ed engine from triple S engine in sydney for less then $2000.

its worth thinking about mate.
Do a search on here if you want, there is a few good links.

you obviously havent owned a turbo rb30 patrol with big tyres, the gearbox is piss week ive destroyed 2 already and i dont abuse it. they may be strong in a car but not in a 3 ton fourby. the 4.2's have a lot lower first gear also.

the turbo rb30 is great fun, and there are endless things you can do to get big hp, but if you want low down grunt the 4.2 is the better choice.
