Post by nellyb1 »

people....

I'm just wondering if is running a MSEFI in their gq.

I'm sick to death of my carby so i'm keen to see if this makes a good or bad difference to the car and would love to talk with someone about it.

So if yourve heard anything about it, can you guys let me know.

Cheers

I've built and am running a megasquirt v2 on my datsun, and i can't speak highly enough of it!
I'm running a crank pulley trigger wheel and 1 coil per plug (wasted spark). This meant i could ditch the sloppy old dizzy altogether and set the timing and fuel exactly where i wanted it.
I built a custom inlet manifold/plenum for my car but with a patrol all you would have to do is get an inlet manifold off an injected model and use that. Dont worry too much if you can't find a manifold complete with injectors/throttle body/sensors etc cos you can use whatever you like. For example i'm using mitsubishi injectors, pintara throttle body etc etc

yeh so far it seems like its the best after market ecu, when you take in what it can do, easy of install and price.

I went for a surf thru youtube, there are plenty of videos of people running all sorts of different cars, trucks, lawnmowers and homemade turbine engines on there.

So the instal seems pretty simple by what i can understand, but what about that first start up and tune.

I'm guessing you have a look at the tuning manual for the car and try and match that first, then start moving stuff around.

Any pictures or video links of it running?

A mate has m/s on his 1978 kwaka Z650, runs GPZ1100 t/b's. It runs great. My brother has a few m/s kits, we are goin to EFI and turbo i/c a 1977 Z1000 and EFI and supercharge a 1973 Z900 with 1427 big block kit.

far out man that thing looks like it would fly. sounds great too.
I had a honda Boldore 900. Had four carbys on it and was a bitch to try and get running right. that kawka runns something like that doesnt it.

OK heres a good question for you all then.
I wanna get rid of the dizzy as well.
Some people run the wasted spark setup. Can a stright 6 use that? seems that a 4 cly can, but do they need two coils. so for a stright six, do i need three coils to run it?
I've read a bit on here with people saying that the COP setup is crap coz they keep breaking them. is that fairly normal on a 4wd?
Or is the best option to go with the EDIS setup? It seems the best option so far i think.

Wasted spark with a 6 cyl is just a case of using three spark outputs from the computer to drive 3 coils. You can run coil on plug (6coils) if you want to, you'll just have to split the output from the computer to each coil. What i would do is use 3 coils that have 2 outputs like in some of the hyundai's and commodores etc and then still run spark plug leads.

so it would run:

from the ecu

to 3 coils.

with each coil going to 2 plugs.

i was under the impression that the ecu could run 6 COP's.
i am still a little confused over how to get it to run three coils.
what system is that?
is it still EDIS. or is it something different?

Yeah you'd use three of the spark outputs from the computer, hooking them up to one coil for cyl 1+6, one coil for cyl 2+5 and another to cyl 3+4 (although to suit your firing order)
This is the simplest way i know of..
As for running 6 coil on plugs - yes you can do this and its easy. If you still use three spark outputs from the MS and hook it up like this:
Spark output A - to COP's for cyl's 1+6
Spark output B - to COP's for cyl's 2+5
Spark output C - to COP's for cyl's 3+4
This would then be 6cyl COP but Wasted Spark.
Not sure if the MS has six outputs for Spark yet, so you might be stuck with wasted spark on a 6 cylinder - or you can run EDIS and maybe you could get away with it that way..
From my experience, dont bother with EDIS, just build your MS as per the instructions on the MSextra website. I'm using an ABS sensor off the front wheel of a falcon as a crank trigger sensor. If you only look at the MSextra documentation and work from that then you wont get too confused.

DavidS, a member of this forum and others did it to his P40 MQ Patrol. Looks super sweet really and he says it is the best mod he has ever done! If I was running a petrol engine I would do it for sure.

Here is a write up over on my forum...

I have just modified a 265 hemi 4 barrel inlet manifold to take EA falcon style injectors. It will be interesting to see how it runs.

well put it this way man. By what i've heard of 4 barrel manifolds...

its not going to use any more fuel.

Its EA multi point, not the centre point. We turned some bosses and drilled/ground the holes into the end of the runners. I tigged the bosses in position.

I would have made a whole new manifold for my car, but he's happy.

I don't think it can run any worste then the 4 barrel.
