2.8 getting worse??

Post by Turbo Tonka »

hi all i have a 2.8 diesel lux so its a dog on the best of days but it is getting worse and worse.I am using 16+ litres per 100 not abusing it and its getting real slow and struggles, cant get to 100 to sit there on most roads. It is getting alot smokier too,but engine still runs good and only has 188xxx k's on it.I am running 32s,snorkel,ext,2 1/4" zorst etc.

i went and saw the local diesel place the other day and he said my injectors are just real blocked and worn out but that the pump would still be fine and wouldnt need touching.SO..does anyone else agreee or have ideas and how does yours run up the highway thanks in advance

$80 an injector seem ok?

could be a good chance that its sucking air in the fuel system somewhere.
Most likely the fuel pump primer atop the fuel filter.
Check hose connects first, and put some clear hose between the injct pump, and fuel filter pump, and check for air bubbles when running, then place hose behind the filter pump on the tank side to see if its the diaphragm or a hose somewhere.
When replacing the fuel filter, remove the hose on the injct pump side, and pump the filter pump, it will pick up fuel better if you remove this hose to allow it to prime.

Most often people find that the performance drops off a bit when they get their injectors done, due to them not overfuelling as the worn ones did.

With the cost of injectors, ie 350+ for new nozzles, and reset, I would try the hose first.

Ps, the toyota diesel injector cleaner is pretty good stuff too.

apsey mate just get your injectors done. dont listen to this stuff about air in the fuel because it wouldnt idle and miss an carry on. also it wont go worse if you get your injectors done they will have increased pressure mix with the air better. your adjustment for fuel quantity is on your pump not in your injectors. pump timing mit need adjsting to. any way give me a ring or just go see banny pollard at diesel care.

I'd be taking it for new injectors and a tune. Oh, new aircleaner before that too.

Mine was putting out 189NM and 58KW (78HP) at 10L/100km.... after new injectors and a dyno tune it now pumps out 220NM and 70KW (95HP) at 9.4L/100km.

Not to bad for an old bunky 2.8 with 330 thousand K's. Pushs it along at 110 on my 33s no worries at all. Does have a CT20 surf turbo but the gains from a tune are still indicitive.

Hope you get it sorted.

If you running one of those pre cleaners on your snorkel, get rid of it,it`ll reduce air flow, maske it blow heaos of smoke and produce no power at all.
