Looking at a GQ wagon with a auto box.
Never owner a 4by with an auto and never thought i would!
How do they cope pushing big tyres (35-36) ie overheating/ dieing?
How bad are they really at descending?
What are their pros and cons against the trusty manual box
Any opinions would be great.

I loved the Auto behind chev in my Rangie. If the Auto is a chev one it would be good, if Nissan will need some expert attention to survive what you will do to it.

Speak to Rodney at Wholesale Automatics in Bayswater about options, good website also on them. Flame Suit on, Kewish in Dandenong have done my Autos in the past and also many other people I know. Few members here are not happy with them but I have never had trouble with them.

The Homework I have done there supposed to be quite strong and be able to take the 5ltr,
The hardest thing is wiring them up to mate with other ECU's,
But if the one your looking at is all done you dont have to worry about that.
There is options such as Lock up convertor and valve body upgrade, The one main killer is heat, so a oil cooler is std.

A 5.0l is no big deal at all. I have 280rwkw through one (turboed 4.5 nissan V8) and it doesn't even get hot. 93 Nissan Pathfinder / Terrano Turboed VH45, GQ Trans and T-case, coil overs, hydraulic winch and fair bit of other stuff. (Currently a pile of parts in the workshop)

I like my auto. Done a little work with my 35s in the snow and it went well. Just didnt use overdrive at HWY speeds. But my SWB still has the 3.9diff ratios.

Interesting to hear people's experiences with the GQ auto. Our first (or was that 2nd?) GQ was a petty carby auto on gas and it was a gutless bucket of shite. Shortly after we purchased it the auto played up and we took it to a big name local automatics dealer (in Wises Rd for the locals) who quoted around $8K to rebuild it and fit a cooler (none fitted when we purchased it).
His advice was to ditch the Nissan auto and fit a Turbo 700 that he supplied to, and I quote him here "all the caravan towing community that drive around the Sunshine Coast when their auto's detonate". His opinion of the GQ auto was that they were complete junk and not up to the task of moving the car let alone tow something.
Needless to say I converted the car to manual and never looked back. Still very interesting variations of opinions and up until reading the posts above, I was convinced the GQ autos were complete crapola.
Anyway, like I said, interesting to hear others thoughts and experiences.

They can be built tough. Theres anumber of turbo petrol Nissans in Vic that are running the nissan auto.
The 5spd is struggling to be built strong enough. But it seems the 4spd can be built strong.
Actually havent heard of anyone putting a different auto between the Nissan motors and transfer case.

Will the Standard GQ auto cope with Hard recreational four wheel driving behind a EFI 5.0 ltr or would i need to spend coin on it to make it strong and reliable,
i am nervous about buying a truck that may let me down miles away form home. i have had manual patrols since 1995 and never gave a breakdown in the bush a second thought.
I dont do comps or thrash my trucks, but i do run big tyres and enjoy hard slow going tracks.
Still paranoid.

Also a standard 5.0 is pretty gutless so a standard Nissan auto with the proper torque converter and a trans cooler would push it. A TD42T with average boost will have more torque than a 5.0 even would and they handle that fine. Compare the 2 motor specs and you'll stop worrying. Contrary to popular believe the 5.0 Holden motor is not what a V8 Supercar runs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the RE4R03A is the same auto that a lot of nissans run, including skylines. Yarra Valley autos in melbourne do a lot of work with these, and have built a lot of tough skyline boxes over the years.
as for descents, first gear in an auto is always gonna be a lot longer than first in a manual. but if you grab low range, and have a torque converter lockup switch fitted, you should be able to tackle most stuff.

Sorry to hijack but what torque converters are people running with the standard nissan auto and 5 litre holden engine.
I am just about to start a 5 litre conversion and some people say you can run the standard stall converter and other people say you must change the stall speed.
Any advice app reacted.
Also my auto was rebuilt not long ago by a auto specialist looking at a power upgrade at the time.
