Turbo timers
Hi all, what are the benefits of a turbo timer?
90 patrol,petrol,auto,l.r tanks,lift,extract/2.5 exhaust,blah,blah
they allow the oil to keep on circulating though the turbo so when you yurnj it off you dont get a heat soak happenign to the oil in turbo which can burn it and destroy its lubricating propeties of worst allow it to cake up in the turbo eventulay blockin the turbos oil ine and destroying it. and also the engine to cool down a bit and look cool when oyu get out walk away with the car still running then turns off.

Yes you can buy aftermarket ones
bout $200 up
yes most allow you to either set 30 secs, 1 min 2 min 3 min 4 min 5 min, you adust the time depending on the type of driving you been doing.
there is a stop button on most to turn them off
you could get a bling one like this http://www.importscene.com.au/prod533.htm
or a popular one for 4wds is
http://turbotech.com.au/turbotimer.htm (old man has this one is his 100 series works quiet well)
Afaik you need a efi engine with a computer for a turbo timer to work (although i may be very very wrong)

Most new trucks come with timers but they are not adjustable they just have a set time in them (approx 5 mins) Alot of truckies get adjustable ones put in and throw the unadjustable one out. I got one of these for free and wired it in to the hilux. It works great but like I said it is not adjustable but since I got it for free I love it. All I have on the dash for the timer is a red button that if you want to shut it down straight away you just press the button. Also if I want to dissconnect the timer I only have to undo 2 plugs and plug the 2 from the lux into one another, take about 30secs.

Thanks mate... I may have to look into it... The only issues would be unhappy neighbours as i walk off and leave the car popping and bubbling out that big super exhaust i run

check out ebay i got mine from them there for 30 bucks and can be adjusted from 1 second to 10 min in sec intervals its also got a auto timer but i didnt wire that in. i had to wire mine to the ignition wires one for acc on for constant power and one for earth and one for when the ign is in the on postion

got the arb one - 30 sec, 1,2,3,4,5 min... very handy. also have the negitive current running though the handbreak.. so the timer only works when the handbreak is pulled on.. not really my idea, but sugested to me by an engineer when i got my certificert for my lift and tires n stuff..
only problem is if u got an alarm with shock sensor like me and its hooked up to yr central locking u will find yrself standin around watin for the timer to tick down so u can arm the alarm and lock the car.. if i do it before the motor turns off the wobbles of the deisel as it winds down st the alarm off.. big farkup lol.. must look at ajusting sensitvity on alarm..
apart from that go the turbo timers.. not alot that can go wrong.. and got the off button if yr in a hurry.. also as mentioned before does the world of good to yr turbo, and engine.. and u look bling bling

Yeh I built this one seems to worked when bench testing but i'm unsure how to wire it.
Sorry to highjack this thread but does any one know how to wire it up to a BJ42..........Dazz
Normally it's just a case of checking which contacts on the back of your ignition switch are shorted to the incoming +12V with the ignition in the "ON" position and then wiring the relay contacts of the turbo timer across them. Then you also need to find the +12V that is switched and hook that up to the turbo timer as a trigger for it to operate.
You may have more than one contact on the back of the ign switch that is switch to 12V in the "ON" postition, but you only need to wire the one that is used to keep the engine running (eg. power to the instruments may be on a separate contact but is not needed to keep the engine idling)- that's where a wiring diagram for your vehicle is handy.

Correct , not legal to leave vehicle with engine running.
I use the ARB one and have on 3 different vehicles.
One thing I do is to modify the press off button to a positive switch.
This is so when on a gnarly off road bit the timer can be turned off in case I need to stop in a hurry and in gear.

the thing i have found with my old mans 1 in the 100, is if the timer is on the car still cant be driven you put it in gear or take off the break, or try to accell it just stalls out or shuts down. to be able to drive it again, you have to stop the timer and start the car properly or it wont go ne where

yeh with most u should still be able to drive the car, and i think by just pressing the minute/second button or wehatever u can keep resetting it and the car will run forever.. thats why i was told to put mine though the handbreak.. let it off and the car turns off.. sure u can drive with the handbreak on, but no crook is ganna know that.. so they are ganna let it off.. not that i ever expect it to get stolen in the 30 seconds between me gettin out walkin away and then hittin the alarm button over my shoudlder as it turns off.. tho spose u cant be to carfeull these days huh..

Changing the topic slightly...
Assuming now that i am going to be waiting with my car running and the key in the ignition (i.e. not using a turbo timer), how long is an accepted minimal amount of time for me to sit there with it running in order to let the turbo cool down appropriately?

Well, I am about to install a turbo timer(Thanks BJ) into mine, which is an Auto. In my case the Terrano, can not be put into gear without a foot on the brake pedal and the key in the on position, which removes the jumping into gear issue. I don't know if this applies to other auto 4wd, it does in mine and seems to be a std feature in many of the newer models, not just an import like mine which is a 94 model.
