YEars ago I got told about $700 to replace, ended up replacing the $3 brushes myself. All because the auto leccy didn't want to do the job.

around the 500 mark is about right, I got mine replaced 2mths ago, but had to get a new model which has the vaccuum pump under the alt instead of at the rear (or something like that) also needed some reqiring done to fit the new alt.

Apparently they have changed the design since mine was new 1991.

Other people most likely knwo more about this that me.

pull your alternator apart and replace the brush's yourself, going through mud will stuff it everytime so u have to learn to do it yourself for nothing or pay around $150 for a auto electrcian to do it 4 u.
what area u from?
