gearbox breather cap(stuck?)
gearbox breather cap(stuck?)
just after some info on my gearbox breather for my sierra???is it ment to pop up and down/spring loaded like my transfer and diffs?i noticed it was stuck shut and that the little holes at the top sides of it were blocked so i used a pin to unblock these.
Could this possibly be the reasoning for my gearbox leak, maybe pressurising when hot?
if someone could tell me if its right or if i need to lever it off or something thatd be great thankyou, matt

Oh really? Awesome, here I was thinking I had a leak, thanksPJ.zook wrote:Running garden hose is a good idea for breathers, a lot of people do it.
If you are talking about gearbox oil leaking out on inclines, all sierras do it, it leaks out the gearshift lever hole, you cant really stop it.

yeah agreed, mine was just about on its side one arvo, and when we were disussing a recovery plan,we saw oil running from the box, down the tunnel, over the case and i thought id cracked the case too, haha but then later saw where it was from

If it is indeed coming out that little slit, then you have either a rear main seal or an input seal kaput, which is not a good thing, as if you get oil on youre clutch then you could lose drive at a most inconvenient time.Turbo Tonka wrote:cheers pj,na its leaking out the little slit thing in the bottom of the gearbox, more on a real hot day
maybe that will be a good thing, then ill leave it out bush and forget about it.haha na i know i really need to pull it out and check i just cant be bothered,i just wanna drive the thing.i sometimes think rear main,by look of oil etc, then other times i think its gear oil by smell or whatever, only real way is to sack up and get her apart maybe after tomorrows wheeling
