Air box/filter questions and tech

Post by bj on roids »

Has anybody upgraded their factory airbox to anything other than a Pod filter? Most factory air boxes are massive so won't fit once engine mods take place.

I want a compact, high flow airbox to suit a custom application.

Preferably something with a one way water drain or outlet to put between my snorkel and my turbo.

Does anything out there exist like this, or am I up for a big $$ custom job, or try to modify and reduce the size of the stock unit?

could modify something like a honda s2000 airfilter and houseing? runs a long pod type filter inside it. i think they might run a similar set up with some civics and integras.
could easily be adapted to run along the very side of your engine bay or possibly inside the guard. they prolly about the size of a 1 and a half 6 pacs put end to end

Ill go anything, I can make my own inlet/outlet, needs to be compact, but with large filter surface area... Yeah Donaldson stuff all seems to be MASSIVE (like external 4x4 applications and trucks, or am I looking at the wrong gear?)

Any pics? Sounds the go.

I will end up fitting 4.5" inlet and outlet pipes.

The only compact filters that WORK, are the donaldson powercore and the MANN+HUMMEL Compact Plus.

Powercore element:

Compact plus housing (on left):

Anything else and you may as well just run no filter, and spend your money on hookers instead.

Unless your application is a 2-3L petrol engine, the S2000 filter will be far too small, and would not be designed for offroad applications. Diesels flow a lot more air than petrols and need much larger filters.

trouble is, anything smaller is going to reduce flow or length of time before the filter is blocked up with dust.
fairly rare to have a factory filter than is far bigger than what is required, most are too small.

best to find something of similar size but different shape that will fit.
if you have improved performance of the motor then you certainly want something bigger than stock. (also applies to a lesser extend for those with blocked EGR)

you may just have to get creative on shape and location of the filter.

got any pics of engine bay?

True, except for the filters I posted above. They are a completely new, patented design, that makes thye filter MUCH more compact for a given media surface area.

However they are $$

x2 for the Donaldson filters, they are a good robust unit that filters the air very well while still allowing a large flow rate.

You could also try a UMP Airbox. I dont have any personal experience but they are used by desert racers. Someone on here should be able to comment. They also take K&N filters which is an advantage to some people.
http://www.uniquemetalproducts.com/

Theres also Advanced Aircleaner Systems that I've found in my travels, again no experience with the filter effectiveness or flow rates but they design them specifically for desert racers and paris-dakar trucks.
http://www.advancedaircleanersystems.com/

As with most things, its a balancing act between flow rate and filter effectiveness, depending on if your going for out and out power or reliability (or somewhere in between ;) )

Cheers

would a 3l reving at 6k not flow a similar amount to a 4.5l reving at 4.5k?

Ive made a few over the years for mates cars.

We run uni or pod filters and snorkel socks - more than adequate filtration for an offroad 4wd. (if your doing long runs in the dust you may want more)

Both setups are airtight to the snorkel head

I made my own for my conversion and I am just using the standard Holden air filter element, it seems to be working well so far.

I made my own Air box to suit a barrel pod filter and the snorkel is 4" in diameter, works a treat and the box doesn't get very hot at all.

Can you show us some more pics?

How do you change the filter?

Is it a pretty standard pod in there?

Thats kinda what I need....

In fact, that'd be perfect.

Is it a big bit of tube, with a smaller bit of tube welded to it?

Thats what I am going to run, pod straight onto the turbo, box off that into snorkel...

There is some great ideas and tech in here too, love the MQ with quad cam!

Thanks to everyone who has posted, I am looking at the Advanced air cleaner options too, will make some measurements.

It started out as flat sheet 3mm steel, I cut out the end plates then I migged & bent the sheet to a cylinder.
Next I migged a 4" exhaust tube to connect the snorkel up.

The pod goes in one way, then I made up a 3mm rubber gasket that seals the alloy checker plate lid.
The hole at the turbo end is big enough to let the rubber joiner of the tube pod stick out so it can be joined to the turbo outlet.
When its all bolted up it is air tight.[/img]

looking at building my own setup soon and have a question for the masses.
with the standard GQ they have the cyclonic pre-cleaner which has a hole in the bottom to let the dust it spins out, out, and to let water in, and out...
so my question is, with these air-tight to the snorkel head type of boxes, what do you do when its raining heavy and water is pouring into the snorkel as you drive along, or when you hit a big puddle at a million miles an hour and cover the vehicle in a sheet of muddy water, what happens then?

cheers, andy

most snorkels have water drain holes at the back of the hat. rain goes in, hits the back of the snorkel and drains out the holes.

bj its a Surf running Holden V8 with a few extra mods done to it, runs straight gas.
As for water getting in through the snorkel I haven't had a problem at all, the top is facing sideways to the front of the car.
I've been running the 4" snorkel for 4 years now with no dram's except for a time when the motor was playing up and wouldn't rev over 2500rpm and a couple of days of frustration in trying to tune it, plugs, spark leads, new caps, rotor button, air filter all went in the Surf then I pulled the tube off the snorkel and found 4 tennis balls in it :bad-words: .... had a laugh when they kept falling out.
Put the snorkel back on and she flew again.
Cheers

hahaha, 4 tennis balls, thats great.
i might make a start on mine then, plenty of mild steel kickin around and an old airtec snorkel head, so might have a play with all that and see how i go.

im gonna run mine running facing forwards as i do alot of highway kms, and ill just have to keep an eye on getting water in. so the concensus is, 'she'll be right mate'?

Safari do a 3.5" head that I have squeezed onto 4" pipe in the past. Or 4" plus you get the big truck heads, should stop tennis ball shenanigans!

What do they use to seal the two surfaces up in those boxes? Is it a big o-ring type seal, or is it just the two square surfaces that make the good seal?

Do they have a CFM/HP/engine size rating for their stuff? (website has no info).
