G13A engine rebuild
G13A engine rebuild
G'day, I just got myself a second suzuki sierra for parts. It has a G13A engine which has died and I would like to rebuild it for my other car, a 1985 Holden Drover (with the same engine in it). What I would like to know is would it be worth working the heads and upgrading the camshaft to gain performance or should I just leave it as is (standard engine, extractors ans 2" exhaust)? Just so you know, I don't want to go to a 1.6 engine, and I am not interested in any forced induction. Thanks in advance for any info!
1990 NG Paj TDI: 2.5 exhaust, 146l Longranger tank, snorkel, 2" suspension lift, 31" Bighorns.
1985 Holden Drover: 2" OME suspension & shocks, extractors, 2" exhaust, 235/75 MTR's

Having done head porting and cam work I disagree.PJ.zook wrote:Theres not a lot of point doing any porting or even much cam work in the sierra as without other major mods such as forced induction, it doesnt improve things much. The best basic mods you can do for more power is swap out the carby, and use extractors. Look in the bible for more info.
I found that there may not have been a huge power increase, I found the power delivery to be far improved.

I am currently building a 351 cleveland for my XC ute, i've got the longer rods, the big cam, inlet manifold and carby- but that's a different kettle of fish. I am not necessarily into huge power increases from my zook, I just want the engine to run more efficiently and if possible, use even less fuel than it does now! That's why I asked about the G13A head and cam work! I would however be interested the hear more from love-mud about the work done to your vehicle...

i agree 100% they don't get much power for the money you put in. put a turbo on if for more power and better fuel econ. may old sierra was getting 280 k's to the tank ( on the trip meter, no gearing change) on 33" towing a trailer for work around town and about 320 on trips. went very wellPJ.zook wrote:Theres not a lot of point doing any porting or even much cam work in the sierra as without other major mods such as forced induction, it doesnt improve things much. cheer up emo kid
more horsepower = more fuel. doesnt matter what you do.Sammyboy wrote:I am currently building a 351 cleveland for my XC ute, i've got the longer rods, the big cam, inlet manifold and carby- but that's a different kettle of fish. I was using a 1.6 bottom end with a 1.3 head, simple gasket match on the inlet and exhaust, new vales kept the 1.3 inlet and fitted 1.6 exhaust valves (bout 2-3 mm bigger from memory, was some time ago I had this done) Kept the small intake to aid in high inlet velocity for low end response and bigger exhaust to get rid of the burnt gas's at the 7-8000 rpm the motor would see from time to time, I also had the cam re-ground for better low to mid range pull as this was where I felt the motor was most lacking. I really liked the way it all turned out. It definately had more off idle and mid with perhaps a tiny bit more in the top end.Sammyboy wrote:I am currently building a 351 cleveland for my XC ute, i've got the longer rods, the big cam, inlet manifold and carby- but that's a different kettle of fish. Some of this could be attributed to a minor bump in compression but the head I removed was actually in good order .. I just wanted to try out some theories.
I only spent a few hundred, the valves are quite cheap and if your rebuilding the motor whats a few hundred to even simply reco a head. The work was simple and effective.
