What model hilux springs can I use?

Post by flickaz »

Ive used the search in the past with success but for the last week no matter what I search it returns zero results?? Is anyone else finding this? I know its been covered a lot previously because Ive read the topics in the past but until recently had not contemplated a RUF and hilux rear set up, so payed little attention to detail.

I have a 91WT SWB Soft Top Sierra, complete with shitty flat leafs and would like to fit my F100 rims with 30's under and gain a little clearance. Ive decided to try a RUF and hilux rear but cant find wat model/year hilux springs people have used and if they used front or rear springs??

Id ultimately like about a 2" lift, so am I barkin' up the right tree here? Ive read so much about shock combo's too, but at this stage am keen to keep it simple/cheap, so using stock mounts is preferable but with longer travel if possible? Im pretty sure any set up will be softer than a flat leaf :)

I have a turbo GTI set up in the zook so spring wrap is something i want to avoid also.

If you guys have any info Id appreciate it. Cheers!!!

hilux front leaves are about 120mm longer than zuk rears from memory?

get hilux front leaves - theres only one type (before they went IFS front).

you need to be prepared to do a lot of grinding and welding to make it work though, and getting the right spring rate out of the lux leaves means dropping the load leaf and running the pack almost flat... mine have a total of 2" arc in them at ride height - so you wont get 2" lift from them.

Oh, I was under the impression that I would get a bit of a lift from RUF and put lux front springs in the rear with shackles to even out the ride height. The hands on is not an issue as my brother and I did the total turbo gti conversion ourselves, including custom manifolds and wiring. At this stage Im just looking to replace the old stuffed leaves with something cheap that'll allow 30" rubber on F100 rims and a bit of flex :)

wrecker leaves and a bodylift is likely your best bet then - least cost for least work... followed by a guard chop...

As alien said, the RUF and lux fronts in rear takes a bit of work. If you just after some flex and room for 30's, just keep the flat rears, do a RUF (Flat springs are soft and flex well, nothing wrong with them) and a 2 inch bodylift. Trim teh guards and your off. If you doing it cheap, commodore rear shocks in front and HiAce in rear.

If you want to do lux in the rear, do you want to stretch the WB out. If so, plenty of panel work to make it work. Its approx 6 inch stretch. My brother runs this setup, but his is a ute so panels are not an issue.

All good info guys, but I gotta to say Im a little perplexed about my suspension now. At the moment u pretty much need a mouth guard to drive it cos bumps really suck in my zook. Ive never seen a pioneer cd player skip like mine does lol. Is it possible that my shocks r the issue? I have next to no experience with leaf set ups but figured as the leafs were pretty much straight from eye to eye (or mount to mount depending what you call it ) that they wouldnt flex and would only bottom on the bumps stops really easy? I removed the swap bar, which gained a tiny bit of softness and a reasonable amount of understeer!!! lol, but when u rock the car it feels pretty soft??? Thinking about it now I may actually test that theory, possibly by sticking something malluable to my diff or bump stops and seeing if there's contact there under normal driving conditions.

Any ideas lads?

throw up a few pics of the suspension, it may be that sagged it hits bumpstops all the time............. zooks are rough but not as bad as you are saying. Also check and see if the shocks are stuffed, usually leaf springs dont need that good of a shock compared to other suspension types.

ps poineer head units are the worst name brand i have seen with regards to skipping from bumps so dont use that as a gauge :P

when my shocks were shagged (stock ones) i was smashing the bumpstops a lot and the ride sucked... i went 2" leaves and cofap extended shocks and the ride was brilliant.

Cheers for the help guys. I took a few pictures on my phone quickly, to give you an idea of the springs but I'll be stuffed if I can work out how to post them to this thread???? lol.

It was on pretty much even ground and the bump stop to diff clearance was approx 35mm front 60mm rear unloaded.

I flexed up the front right tonight. Was on a ramp double height of a normal car ramp and it was on the stops at the front right and rear left, but still had good traction, was quite surprised how much it flexed. I'll try get pics in the day light of this.

Any ideas or suggestions Id be glad to hear it :)

youll need to upload your pics to the net, somewhere like photobucket is fine, then you can add image tags either side of a link to the image by clicking the Img button (2nd from the right) either side of the link, so youll get (IMG)link(/IMG) on your post, but the pic will appear.

I dont remember the gap on my bump stops, but 35mm is NOTHING of a gap for up travel... its very likely your smashing the bump stops on the road. You could test it by putting chalk on the bumpers and go for an average drive, after that see if any of it has been transferred to the other side of the bump stop =)

Ok so Ive made a photobucket account, hopefully this works.

Im almost convinced im riding on the bump stops most of the time, as the suspension actually seems to flex very well for stock and I have such little bumpstop clearance.

Im guessing new shocks will not help this? Was thinking a quick fix until I get some 2" springs will be new shocks and or knock up some extended shackles to get a little more clearance. Is this ok? Will the commo/hilux/hiace shocks work on shock set ups or are they too long?

The commodore/hiace setup needs extended bump stops. Its more suited to cars that have bigger tyres, where extended bump stops are already needed to stop the tyres eating the guards. Zooks from factory had very lifflt arch in their springs and low clearence to the bump stops. What shocks do you have. My zook can go from fine to terrible with just a change of shocks.

My suspension was like that for the first 3 years i owned my Sierra, if anything your rear looks to sit higher than mine did. It wasn't comfortable, but wasn't too bad; I know it was bumping out too. My front shocks were doing nothing, had no damping left in them at all.
If you say its that uncomfortable, what tyre pressure are you running? or as Lay80n said what of your shockies?

For a quick fix, maybe reset your current springs about an inch higher to prevent the bumptops hitting so often.

That all said a 2" lift with commo/hiace shocks on mine produced huge improvements to the ride comfort, swapping to cherokee rear shocks was an improvement, and longer front springs with different brand front shockies made it even better again (with this setup I only have 40mm front uptravel on the front drivers side, 50mm passenger side; but do run monster bumpstops). My suspension has cost me just over $1000 to get it to where it is now, if you want a rough gauge on price.

A stocker should be running 20psi in the tyres. Unfortunatley many tyre joints have NFI and pump them up to 30 or higher. If you dont belive me check your tyre placard.

The shocks in it are what ever was fitted when I bought it. Its sat in the shed for 6 months doin the GTI turbo conversion and I always planned a proper spring lift, but now am buying a house so has to be put off or find a cheaper alternative for a little while.

As you can see in the pics they're a pedders of some description, but I doubt they have any life left in them. As for tyre pressures I reckon they had about 32PSI in them, cos I checked em the other week, and having a commodore and no previous zook experience thought nothin of it :)

I have a set of 5 F100 rims with 31x10.5/15 rubber (came with rims). I havent fitted them as id prefer something more around 29-30" as I want to keep it looking closer to stock. Only problem Ive found is 30" are hard to find and 235/70 series tyres are normally a 16" rim. I know there's small differences in rolling diameters but i have a 235/70/15 goodyear wrangler on an F100 rim and its a sweet size and fit I think.

Im really not one for doing things twice but Id like a cheap short term solution that will give me a chance to go off road a little.

Let the tyres down! Then if its still unbarable worry about it more (I reckon you'll be able to handle it after this).
I personally found 18psi in my old 205s, placard says 20psi (as per Layto's post above), my father runs about 24psi on his 205s but they are uber soft sidewalls, and he carrys around a load of work tools.

I dropped them to 20 and the ride is a lot better. I'm knocking up extended front shackles this weekend to even out the front. Its only a quick fix until I decide on a set of 2" lifted springs but at the moment I have 35mm clearance front and 60mm rear. I reckon this would be mostly caused by the extra weight of my gti set up.
