Stuffed AC Compressor. 100s 1hz. What are my options?

Post by mike_nofx »

Hey all, went to get my AC re-gassed in my 100 series (1HZ) and they've told me that i need a new AC Compressor.

It is leaking gas, and the clutch is worn on it. He's told me a new one will be around the $700 mark.

I'd just like to know if a reconditioning kit can be bought and i service it myself?

Or i will just try and source a 2nd hand one. Are there any other models of car which would have the same compressor (to increase my chances of finding one). Or can a similar compressor be adapted to suit?

Any ideas would be much appreciated. I dont want to spend $700!

Thanks
Mike

cough the $700, it's a small price to pay for comfort with warranty. if you buy second hand you risk getting one that is barely any better that what you have, if you could find a kit (unlikely) you risk getting it open to find that it's internally stuffed anyway.

Mate $700 is cheap! do it once do it properly. Buy a second hand unit you dont know how long its been sitting. And even then a second hand unit is 200+ dollars then fitting + gas. Its alot of money to throw around with no warranty or guarantee. You dont know if the seals are in good cond etc. you could end up buying a dud. I would spend the $700 and be done with it. They say you should run the air-con at the minimum of once a month for around 10-20 mins so it gets everything turning and lubed up. to help make the system last a full life. Unfortunetly when your talking air-con its expensive. other alternative is to wind the windows down

You could repace it with an aftermarket one such as the Sanden 508 (providing the capacity is sufficient.) Buy or make a mounting bracket to suit. I believe they are more like $250 new.
