BJ42 - Conversion
Hi all.
I'm looking for some information on some relatively easy engine conversions for my 83BJ42.
I would like a 6 cylinder Diesel, Or even Turbo Diesel.
Anyone done one?
Any help much appreciated.

13bt would be easiest i would imagine..
mitcho off here is doing a 12ht conversion. be interested to see what he ends up with and how long he can keep it rubber side down..
crushers on ih8mud has put a 1hz in a 40 (not sure if its a 42 or not)..
there are a few options for you!
post up some pix of your 42 that your looking at converting? Whats wrong with just slapping a turbo on your 3b?

I'm Not sure if it is worth turboing the current engine. Its 302 K old. But seems in pretty good condition, Doesn't blow smoke etc.
Is there a notable performance increase with a turbo? Like, speed etc.
300k is ok if its in good condition. Get it compression tested and see what it looks like. If you continue to look after it and don't rev its tits off, it will handle a turbo ok. I'm considering a turbo for my 3b that has 400k plus.
Will definatley notice performance improvement, hold speed up hills etc.
Mate if your 40 didn't need body work, its would be because it is fibreglass. Try my method if rust removal. Grind, bog, paint brush on kill rust paint, lanolin/fisholin. Is very dodgy, but cheap and quick. Trying to make them too pretty just keeps them off the road.

or you can home brew it using a stock exhaust manifold flipped, a suitable turbo and adapter plate. Thats it!

The only reason I'm considering a turbo on the 3b is because of the home brew idea as above. Can do it for sub $1k. Need to do some research first though. And I do have a turboed 2H in my backyard that would go great guns - may still go down this route yet.

I would stick with the 3B and turbo it. Cheaper and easier, I turbo'ed mine on 1 saturday afternoon.
Got the exhaust done on the monday!

I found a thread on this from a few years ago but the photos are no longer available.
Is there a particular make/model of turbo that is better? I read a t3/t4 is the go but that is just the flange type isn't it? I would go with a new one to avoid issues.

I have a mate in the rice scene and gave me some contacts who might be able to help source a turbo once I know more specifics.. basically, go in there with all the info from ih8mud about ideal A/R ratios, housing sizes, what turbos from what vehicles have worked before and they are likely to be able to find a turbo thats suitable at the right price.....
I'm just yet to get that info together but the more the merrier!.
How did you plumb your airbox and what did you do with your power steering (move the resivour to the firewall?)

Did my brothers the same way only about 2 years ago.
I personally used a re-mapped turbo off a Subaru (cheapest)
You can also use little mitsubishi turbo's, hilux/surf, find a cheap GOOD Condition turbo and flip your stock manifold upside down, use the exhaust flange from the turbo and the standard manifold, weld a piece of 1-2" pipe between them, go for something around 2-2.5" and shape it to suit, one will be round the other probably square, but make sure its got decent wall thickness.
I then modified the airbox with a 3" 90degree straight into the top of the turbo.
Took the water cooling from the heater lines (T-pieces)
Oil from the alternator (T-piece) drained back to sump with another banjo at first onto bung, then later pulled sump and welded fitting to go into side.
With my brothers car, we ran 3" stainless tubing all through to the snorkel/airbox etc. Again modified airbox with 90 degree drop straight into turbo, but his manifold was the 13B-t manifold, and turbo, just has a little bit nicer manifold and sits a fraction lower and closer to centre. We swapped out his clutch line, and insulated the new one, and ran an alloy plate over his exhaust.
Both had 2.5" straight through systems.
I was running 20psi, my brother runs between 6-10psi.
We put his turbo on at 240k or so...
