5.0l in a GU..UPDATED
Hey mate,
thats not strictly correct. it does have to do with emissions. i had heard this before and for my last couple conversions was not an issue as they were into my 77 celica (so i wasn't going with an older motor )
But i think if the motor complied with the same series of ADR's as the vehicle, the actual year of the motor doesn't matter. They dont change the ADR requirements each year so there will be a window that is acceptable.
I know of fully engineered vehicles in nsw with older motors - the 1J conversion into a lexus IS200 is a fairly common one. and alot of these use the older 1J motors.
Cheers

if u put an older motor into a new car the old motor has to be upto emission standard of that car year. i know for sure that is how it is in QLDtoy77 wrote:Hey mate,

Hey lads just me again,
well the commy's about to get it's engine ripped out so the rebuild can begin!
turns out my clutch is just about fagged in the nissan to which is good timing
Question-will a genuin nissan clutch handle a 5.0l?(not stroking it to a 355 anymore) just have exhaust mods, good 4 inch snorkle intake and maby a new cam and chip and a dyno!
And if not what clutch do you recommend?
And also what exhaust to run??
extractors into 2.5" into 3" after first muffler?? that was my plan!, and or go strait to 3' from extractor join?
btw dont want it to drone at highway speeds!
At the moment my truck does 100km at 2300rpm which i feel will be to high reving for the 5.0l and may increase the noise..!
im thinking i will need 3.9 centers?!
Advise from guy's who have done/got one(5.0l) in there truck would be great!
cheers
Aaron

yeah getting the kit through marks!chunderlicious wrote:a good quality nissan pressure plate and a GM pressure plate is what is needed (although the marks kit has an output shaft entension that changes the nissan spline to GM)
decide what kit your using then ask from there as most kits have been used on here.
as you said it changes the nissan spline to GM!
so a new genuin clutch should be ok if it's with the GM pressure plate?!

sorry about the typo, yes a GQ clutch plate is what rodshop and dellow use but i dont know about marks. they may do thing different
if the marks does change the output spline to GM youll need a GM clutch plate aswell. you wont be able to use a nissan one.
someone with a marks kit needs to pipe up here.

Well thought it was about time to update my thread!
Everythings working and driving sweet!
i'v had afew beers so bare with me..
Just to re hash i put a 5.0l v8 into a gu4.5, mods to engine were complete rebuild,heads ported,hardened valves,hsv headers/exhaust and hsv chip.
makes 160hp at wheels on petty and bout 7 hp different on gas!
tb45 used to make 110hp at wheels!
Gossy's done the dyno tune and reckoned that in a comma it would have made about 210 odd hp, so there's quite a bit of loss in the weight and drive train
not a big difference i know.. power has gone from geez this is sh1tting me to mmm comfortable! but deffinately not oh sh1t hang on power..
if someone was going from a 2.8 or NA 4.2 they would notice a big difference!
total cost for conversion was prob about 6, thats after i sold afew things!
as for ecconomy im getting about 40-50km more per tank of gas then the tb45 so 440 odd per 90l!
problems encounted during the conversion was the holden power steer bracket, it had to be chopped and modded to clear the steering box!
also the loom that i had custom made was meant to be plug and play...it was not!
the speed interface box i was made also gave afew dramas involving blown fuses, shorting out the speedo fuse on the back of the cluster and telling the ecu that the car was doing 15km/h at idle....!
so im currently getting that sorted out..
i had to swap my tb45 radiator with a zd3.0 one, as the inlet and outlet hoses were on the wrong side with the tb45 radiator!
and as for over heating issues..there are none what so ever, and i have given it some pedal up the beach with trailer in tow afew times and also sand and mud recovery's!
i used the heavy duty chev clutch and pressure plate as it was cheaper then the standed clutch, so the imput shaft(spacer bearing??) had to be machined down! thers a slight squeel while the clutch is depressed about 30mm! used all standed tb45 clutch cylinders!
now i have not surrended in saying this but i have already been sourcing/pricing 355 stroker parts/cam etc
from the few blokes iv spoken to about a stroker in ther gu's there getting about 250hp at the wheels with 33's but its the torque that these blokes love over the 5.7!
i dont plan on doing it for a while but would love to do it!
i know my mixer will be right but the tb45 pump gives up at around 210hp!
now im not getting spitefull here, but are all those 300wrkw 6.0l in patrols or still in the commas??
i'd be thinking that you would take off 1/3 of that for the weight/drive train and aerodynemic's(spelling) of the brick that is a GU
one main question i have is- do people still use the gm power steer pump of do they graft something else to fit?
because at slow random intervals the steering "stutters" which while 4wdriving can be a pain!
i spoke to marks and they reckon thats all they ever use..!
so i dont know if mines just flogged out??
now would i do this conversion again with a 5.0l..NO!
But if i had a 355 stroker or iron block/head 350 chev..YES
i'l have to get those pics up..
open to responses both good and bad
cheers fellas

I have 240HP at the wheels in my cruiser with stock 5.7L LS1, Just a tune, doesn't even have extractors and is auto with 35" tyres. Cost me $7000 all up.
The 5.0L really isn't worth doing anymore.

I cant remember how many times I've said in here the holden 5.0 is and was always nothing special, in a commodore its ok but its hardly an upgrade, as for power levels my 420,000 kay old 3.0 makes 270hp (200kw) at the wheels and has done trouble free (except blowing up clutches and gearboxes) for more than 2 years....
