Oil seals in 80S transfer case

Post by CRUI5R »

Is there an easy way to replace front and rear oil seals in an 80 series transfer case without completely dismantling it?

You're just talking about the output seals right? Arent they similar to 40/60/75 split case where you just have to remove the output flanges to get at the seal?

That's what i thought, but the flanges aren't bolted on.

Yeah but they should have a nut holding the flange to the output shaft. Even on the earlier split cases you dont have to unbolt the whole housing to replace the seal. Just undo the nut (32mm?) and the flange comes off giving you access to the seal.

there is no nut on the flange. it needs to have the extension housings to be taken off, for rear remove oil pump drive press bearing off to get flange out. the front is similar just no pump.

Wierd, so the flange is mounted internally. Would love to know how. Please post up some pics when you pull it apart.

is that for part time or full time.

from the factory manuals i have at home. the rear output on partime has a flange with nut, but the front does not.

the full time t-case does not use a nut as the flange is part of the shaft.

haha There ya go. You live and learn hey. :D

My book doesn't specify part time/full time and only has the one pic but it makes sense that the cases would be different. Looks like a pain in the arse for the sake of a seal. I'll stick to my split case thanks. Happy tinkering.

Oh and Simkell, I have something for you... 8=====D

Hi i haved a 94 80 series and if you want to change the fromt output shaft seal you have to do it from the inside out.Its not to big of a job if you are mechanicaly minded.Yes the nut is internal but you can do it on the car just be careful not to loose the detent ball and spring that lokates the 4wd level.
