Post by azzad »

Anyone know the opened and closed lengths for the following shocks?

Dobinson GS45 913

Will ring them on Monday if I need to.

They are 700mm extended. Compressed length is about 425mm or 430mm but I am not certain about the compressed length.

We would use this length shock for a 3" lift however Dobinsons and EFS have them for a 4" lift in their catalogues.

Sweet thanks Shane.

Just checking bump stops and if they needed adjusting, I measured 440mm whilst the Patrol weight was on the bump stop.

What do you use for a 4" lift and what are the lengths?

The length of the shock is dependant on the free height of the coil. I could sell a 4" lift coil which is too short for these shocks and I have 2" coils whcih work well with these shocks.

If I were to use Dobinsons shocks for a 4" lift I would use GS45-915 which are 732mm extended and 457mm compressed.

What brand are your coils and part number if you have it, otherwise take the coil out and measure the free height and I can tell you what shock length would suit best.

For a 3" lift we usually use Lovells shocks or Boss adjustable shocks and anything bigger we use Boss adjustable shocks and sometimes Procomps.

I will check but I think they are as follows:

Rear Shock GS45 - 913

Front Coil C45 - 100
Front Shock GS51 - 116

Im happy with the package I have I was just curious is all.

I wouldn't be happy with the package.

The coils you have are the ones I am talking about that fall out with the 3" lift shocks. I have 2" lift coils taller then them. I sent the coils you have to a customer recently for an extra heavy duty 3" lift but they were too short. I appologised and found an appropriate solution.

Just checked and the only thing I got wrong was the front springs are:

C45 108

I dont know why you have had problems with these rear springs falling out?

I never have and when I did my testing prior to this post asking for lengths I had to remove the shock to get the springs out.

Those coils can't fall out with those shocks dazza, thats why I sold them to you, you can put the longer ones in but then the coils fall out - I had that happen to me when I had the same coils as you but pro comp shocks which were 725mm extended - the 700mm dobinson shocks are perfect length for those coils.

cheers

The free height of C45-113T is 505mm on the drivers side and 480mm on the passenger side. These coils are listed as a 4" lift but can and usually is used as a heavier duty 3" lift for someone with a big load on the rear.

The free height of normal 3" lift rear coils, C45-309T is 515mm / 500mm. As you can see the passenger side is 20mm lower on the passenger side.

My customer who I sent these coils to definitely had the passenger side coil drop out. I would check the passenger side again.

Oondy there is another part number which I have asked Dobinsons to create which is exactly the same as C45-309T except with 21mm wire instead of 20mm wire so for now on this will be a better alternative. For some reason I didn't write down the part number but I am getting a pallet sent on Monday so I will edit this post when I check the part number.

The front springs C45-108 are an extra heavy duty 3" lift. You must have a winch.

Andy, I dont have any issues with them, all I was chasing is a closed length to check bump stops and just asked out of curosity.

I can check 100 times and I an ensure you they will not come out without me first removing the shock.

I dont have a winch yet; when funds permit.

Thanks for the feedback.

Azzad, even though theoretically you definitely should be spacing out your bump stops, nearly no-one ever does for a 3" lift and we don't have any problems with stuffed shocks. I have sold heaps of these and only once have I had a leaking shock and I think the shock would have been not quite right from the factory. If you plan to do some jumping then I would definitely recommend it though and would definitely respect the man who does the job right.

Try jacking the rear of your Patrol with a high lift jack in the centre in your tow ball and see if the passenger side falls out then. If it does I wouldn't be concerned about it. I am surprised though and will be doing some more testing myself. I assume the sway bar links are disconneted.

I get my travel ramp today or tomorrow

Must be different for different vehicles.

With my GU Patrol I was testing 2" lift coils with a free height of 470mm on the passenger side and the coil was loose but not falling out with a 665mm shock. With a 460mm coil and the 665mm shock the coil was too short if you had it jacked up in the centre.

I have spoken with other suppliers who have found the same thing. So it is surprising.

I am not having a dig at anyone so please do not take this the wrong way.

Its no wonder it can be confusing for some people when choosing suspension products and maybe why there are so many threads on it when 2 suppliers of the same product give different results and recommendations.

This is the 2nd time I have come across this with different products which is why I have done my own testing and measuring.

Again please do not take this the wrong way I appreciate the information and support you both have given.

Thanks

There is more then one way to skin a cat.

I can say with our flexy coils that they keep evolving. There are so many ways to make a coil to sit at 3 inches higher.
