The noise is evident under load and sounds almost like a manifold leak, you know that ticking sound the manifold makes. Trouble is the seems to be no leaks and if you pull the bonnet and rev it it wont reproduce the noise it only does it when driving under load and it doesnt have to be extreme load. the confusing thing is that from the cab (hzj75) it actually sounds like its the inlet side but I have checked all the inlet manifold and piping and this seems sealed as well. Some one mentioned they get a conrod noise but this doesnt sound right.
Anyway any ideas on this one. It has 400K on iot and an after market turbo thats been on it since way before I got it and the noise has been there since I got it and doesnt seem to affect it it runs great and smooth and economical uses no oil between changes. Due for a belt change about now. I've done about 80K in it myself and dont go over 100km/h around 2350 revs and rev it to about 3200 in gears on a hill or 22-2500 on normal driving through gears.
Hope thats enough info for someone to give me an idea cheers.

incidenty i stumbled across an article today discussing this very issue
from my history it is
http://www.4wdaction.com.au/forum/showt ... hp?t=48307
summary is it's something to do with the crank shaft, but not a serious problem, though it is a common one.
If it's any consolation my 80 has 340 on it, it ticks, and running pretty good. Though there's also a 1hz with 360 in bits on the shed floor because it spun (at least) one big end bearing. (i know that probably does nothing for your confidence) At least that one didn't tick.

I tried tracking this down in my brother's work car for about 18 months. We replaced the front shaft and uni's, shimmed the valves (bucket and shim)
Comression tested
New exhaust
New sump and rocker cover gaskets
Tuned pump
still had a slight ticking under load at certain rev ranges and very intermittent..
WTF!!!
I swore it would have been tappets when I drove it...

hands and mums dont count!!!
mine started ticking under load as well...
Then teh tick got louder...
Guarentee it's the no 1 conrod shells... No 1 big end gets the LEAST oil pressure out of all cylinders! Mine lasted about 2 months ticking away untile it chewed the bearing caps and went thump, thump, thump...
The crank looks like a cheese grater in the end! Not cool at all!

My brothers work car has been doing it for 20 months or more....
It does lots of work, towing, and carting heavy loads (extended chassis dual cab) Still no big end failure??
hands and mums dont count!!!
Thats what happenend to mine.. Although I have a feeling that the oil sprayer endedup blocked and that assisted the issue! get a stethoscope and have a listen tot he engine - if somethings Nqr then pull the sump off and check the shells.bj on roids wrote:Despite the other evidence in this thread, you beleive it is definitely that?80diesel4play wrote:mine started ticking under load as well...
